LA CENTER — Converting seven of eight penalty kicks, Montesano outlasted La Center in a protracted shootout in the opening round of the District IV Class 1A Tournament on Tuesday at La Center.
Surviving a loser-out play-in game, the Bulldogs (7-8-2) will face Evergreen 1A League rival Hoquiam in a semifinal scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Aberdeen’s Stewart Field.
After regulation play and overtime ended scoreless, Montesano converted its first four attempts of the shootout — with Luis Muro, Nicolai Vikkelsoe, Riccardo Marangon and Ben Lopez finding the net. Since Bulldog goalkeeper Waymn Thoemmes had blocked La Center’s second attempt, the Bulldogs took a 4-3 lead into the final regulation round.
The Bulldogs, however, missed their fifth attempt. The Wildcats converted to prolong the shootout to sudden death.
Successful shots by Monte’s Kyle Cox and Connor Parkinson were answered by La Center. Bulldog defender Eric Blanchard made Montesano’s eighth attempt and the Wildcats shot high on their final try.
“They had the edge in possession and we had the edge in close-range shots,” Montesano coach Rick Denholm said. “There were stretches that they put on a lot of pressure, but our defenders played very well and our keeper played very well.”
Thoemmes had a good game in goal. Blanchard, Marangon, Kenny Moua and Hayden Klinger were credited with strong defensive efforts.

Eagles 10, Beavers 5
ROCHESTER — Cody Williams’ bases-clearing double in the fifth inning ignited Elma past Tenino on Tuesday and kept the Eagles alive in the District IV Class 1A Tournament at Rochester.
The Eagles (6-11) will take on White Salmon in another loser-out contest scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday, probably at Castle Rock. Elma must win both Friday and Saturday (against the Montesano-La Center winner) to earn a regional berth.
Locked in a 4-all standoff, the Eagles loaded the bases via three walks in the fifth. Williams unloaded his two-bagger to clear the sacks.
Elma added three more runs in the sixth to pull away, with D.J. Coonse’s RBI double the key blow in that inning.
“They were throwing soft. Once we started timing them, we were able to pound out some key hits,” Elma coach Todd Baun said. “It was a great team effort. We had clutch hits at the right time and we were able to put together a pretty good game.”
Barrett Burbidge picked up the victory in relief. Elma starter Alex Youckton was suffering from a virus.
Baun called it an emotional win. It was the first anniversary of the death of former Elma baseball player Brycen Rustemeyer, who was afflicted with leukemia.

The Elks finished the season at 7-5.
Neither team played well in a game in a 3 1/2-hour game that contained 14 errors. The difference, according to Lake Quinault coach Keith Samplawski, was that “their errors were not surrounded by a lot of walks.”
Quinault pitchers combined to issue 16 walks.
Gabe Dominguez had two hits and third baseman Murray Cottrell was credited with fine all-around play for the Elks.

Leading 6-2, the Bulldogs were cruising until the sixth inning. The Falcons posted four runs, three of them on a bases-loaded double by Kailey St. Peter, to tie the game off starter Samantha Stanfield. Stanfield worked her way out of a two-out, seventh-inning jam before a 1-2-3 eighth to clinch the win. Stanfield struck out three and walked three.
In the top of the eighth, Allyssa Gustafson got a lead-off single and moved to second on an error. Linghong Schoch came in to run for her, got a stolen base and scored on Cheyann Bartlett’s RBI single. Bartlett would score an insurance run on a Josie Toyra groundout.

Pratt began the tournament as the fourth seed for singles and won her first match 7-5, 6-1 over Tumwater’s Shelby Liston to advance to a second round matchup with No. 1 seed Rachel Wilkerson of Centralia. Pratt fought her way to a win in the second set, but eventually lost a close match 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.
Pratt will try to continue her run through the consolation bracket when play resumes on Saturday morning.
“Aleeta is playing amazing tennis,” Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kohlmeier said. “Her loss to the No. 1 seed is some of the best tennis I’ve ever seen her play.”
The lone other Bobcat in the singles was Katie Cournoyer who was eliminated by Centralia’s Claire Davis, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Aberdeen’s Amanda Bradt and Adrianna Vazquez teamed up to win their first match in the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ashley Werner and Kiara Steen of Chehalis.
