CENTRALIA — Overcoming a slow start, Elma overtook Class 2A Centralia in a non-league contest Tuesday night at Centralia.

In what was their first true test of the young season, the unbeaten Eagles (6-0) trailed 15-9 after one quarter. Kayli Johnson knocked down four 3-point shots in the second quarter to pull Elma to within a point (29-28) at the half.

The Eagles led for most of a bruising second half.

“It was a physical battle all the way out,” Elma coach Lisa Johnson said. “It was a great team win. They played through a lot of adversity and I just love how they responded.”

Kayli Johnson led a quartet of Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Kali Rambo added 11 points and Quin Mikel and Molly Johnston 10 points apiece.

Mikel led Elma rebounders with 14.

The Eagles will make their annual appearance in the Seaside Holiday Classic beginning Thursday. They’ll open against Cottage Grove, Ore., at 4 p.m.

Zoee Lisherness scored 16 points and Zoe Hutchings 15 for the Bulldogs.

Northwest Christian cut Valley’s lead to two with two minutes remaining. Hamilton, however, answered with a rebound basket and Pearson nailed consecutive 3-pointers to seal the victory.

The Eagles (1-5) played a solid defensive game but were unable to get untracked offensively until the fourth quarter.

“I could not be more proud of our defensive effort,” Elma coach Jeff Niemi said. “The kids are 100 percent buying in defensively to what we are trying to teach them. The game down to field-goal shooting and free throws. We are not getting to the line enough and that is something we will work on.”

Cody Vollan had 14 points, 11 rebounds and three assists for the Eagles. Killian Acuff added nine points and eight rebounds, while Sam Schneider scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles will face Cottage Grove, Ore., in the opening round of the Seaside Holiday Classic on Thursday.

The Gulls chopped an 11-point deficit to four early in the final period before the Fishermen launched their concluding surge.

“This was our third game in four nights,” Raymond coach Mike Tully observed. “I think the dead legs got to us. They’re a good team. They put a lot of pressure on and we made some mistakes against their press.”
