“Koski and Anderson had great chemistry, especially in the first half,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “They came out with a box-and-one defense on Koski, but he and Anderson worked well together.”

TUMWATER — Despite a strong defensive effort, Aberdeen came up on the short end against Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference game on Tuesday.

The Bobcats (2-4, 6-9) locked down the Wolves on defense, but struggled to find a rhythm offensively. Aberdeen scored just four points in the first quarter and hit just two of 20 3-point shots on the night.

The Bobcats found their rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves by seven points, but Black Hills was able to hit a couple of long-range shots in the fourth to lift them back on top.

“We’ve struggled in league play to score in the half court and it took us a while to understand how we were going to score on their defense,” Aberdeen coach Mark Buckman said. “It was a strong defensive effort by us and one of our better efforts this season defensively. It was a good battle and we came out on the wrong end. I was proud of the effort.”

The Bobcats were led by 13 points and 12 rebounds from Braden Castleberry-Taylor. Ben Dublanko added nine points and five rebounds for Aberdeen.

Buckman cited Brayden Roiko for his defense.

Walker Oblad overcame a rough shooting night to add 11 points and Peter Hamilton added 11 rebounds for the Vikings (7-7, 11-7).

Raul Mora topped South Bend with 21 points.

Willapa Valley led throughout, with South Bend hitting a barrage of 3-pointers near the end to narrow the margin. Winning coach Jay Pearson nevertheless said this was far from his team’s best outing.

“We were just a step behind,” Pearson said. “When you play a six-man rotation and play back-to-back nights, you do get tired.”

Chad Flemetis had nine points and nine rebounds for the Vikings.

On Friday, Valley visits Ocosta and South Bend (1-12, 1-16) makes the short trip to Raymond.

Warriors 68, Wildcats 49

PUYALLUP — Turnovers doomed Ocosta against Chief Leschi in a Pacific 2B League game on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (4-9, 6-11) struggled with ball-handling in the first half and the Warriors were able to take advantage to build a 19-point lead at halftime.

“Our downfall this season has been turning the ball over and (Chief Leschi) made two runs at the end of the first two quarters,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “We probably gave up 20 points in the first half off turnovers. We went in and talked about it at halftime and came out with a good approach to ball-handling and we played right with them the rest of the game. I was really pleased with our effort in the second half.”

Ocosta played even with Chief Leschi the rest of the way, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

Richard Dueber scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Ocosta, while Kobe Beck scored 12 points and Paul Bjornsgard added eight rebounds.

The Acorns survived a 24-point outburst by Lake Quinault’s David DeLaCruz in a contest that was close all the way.

“It was a one-point game going into the last two minutes,” Quinault coach Christian Garcia reported. “We missed our shots and all we could do was foul.”

DeLaCruz also had five assists. Anthony Ramirez contributed 12 points and rebounds for the Elks (3-5, 3-9).

Garcia also commended Murray Cottrell for his defensive effort against high-scoring Devin Boyd.

“We had great ball movement and were able to get the ball into the high post and get a lot of scoring in the first quarter in the backdoor with the off guard,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum said. “We just had solid all-around play.”

The Bobcats had some varsity performers missing due to a variety of reasons.
