Tuesday Prep roundup: North Beach boys beat Chief Leschi in overtime

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hyaks 77, Warriors 76, OT

OYEHUT — Nolan Charley scored at the buzzer — for his only points of the game — to give North Beach a dramatic overtime win over Chief Leschi in a Pacific 2B League game Tuesday at Oyehut.

Rallying from 10 points down after three quarters, Chief Leschi forced overtime with a 23-point fourth quarter. The Warriors led by one in the final seconds of OT, but missed the front end of a one-and-one foul line opportunity.

Taking a pass from Marcus Pope, Rodney Washington fed underneath to Charley, who made a reverse layin as time expired.

“That reverse layin Nolan made, he practices that shot all the time,” a delighted Hyak coach Larry Moore reported.

Steven Sotomish scored 30 points and Ben Poplin added 19 for the Hyaks (4-6, 5-8), who avenged a lopsided loss to the Warriors in which the 40-point running clock mercy rule was implemented.

Washington grabbed 10 rebounds, Poplin nine and Charley eight boards. Moore cited Austin Brown for reserve contributions in the first half.

The Hyaks visit Hoquiam on Wednesday.

“They made their shots and coupled that with some turnovers on our part,” Hoquiam coach Curtis Eccles said. “Some of the inexperience that was on the floor showed at the beginning.”

Forks’ Seth Johnson led all scorers with 20 points. Victor James had 17 points and Matt Brown 15 for the Grizzlies (1-2, 3-10).

The Grizzlies (2-1, 7-6) were seemingly cruising with a 29-18 halftime lead. But hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter, Forks rallied to tie the game at the end of the period and actually nosed in front by a point early in the fourth quarter.

Vonhof, who had a dozen rebounds, then took charge as Hoquiam re-established control in the fourth quarter.

“We came out extremely flat in the third quarter,” HHS coach Mark Maxfield said. “We got a little more energy, a little more excitement (in the fourth quarter). We played extremely well at the end to pull away.”
