Ocosta 3, South Bend 0
The Wildcats used a strong service game to set the tone as Ocosta picked up 3-0 non-league victory on the road against South Bend Tuesday.
Ocosta (3-0) remained undefeated on the season by winning in straight sets 25-14, 25-9 and 25-12.
Layne Martin was an offensive standout for Ocosta with 11 kills and six aces while setter Emily Snider did well to put hitters in positions to score with 15 assists.
South Bend (0-4) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Ocosta started to build momentum and took a 14-8 lead, forcing the Indians to call a timeout and regroup.
Ocosta was not plagued by a slow start in the second set and held a double-digit lead for most of the game.
Wildcats head coach Barbara Rasmus said Snider gave everybody on her side of the net a chance to pick up points.
“She was spreading it out tonight. She used everybody on the court, including our libero (Evalyn Marsh) who got a kill because Emily was spreading it out,” she said. “She was doing a really nice job of making sure everyone was in the offense.”
South Bend looked to be in position to steal a set when the Indians got off to an 8-1 start in the third game by scoring eight straight points.
The service game of the Indians’ Brittney Jones played a big role in South Bend’s seven-point lead as the outside hitter came up with three aces.
The Wildcats didn’t let the Indians run away with the set, however, and scored 10 straight points to retake the lead.
Rasmus said she didn’t want to call a timeout with her team down early in the last set and was pleased to see her players work through the adversity by themselves.
“That’s what we’re really working on, them coming through hard times without getting down on themselves and falling apart,” she said. “They were doing a great job of that tonight. They adjusted, didn’t get down on themselves and had that confidence that they could still do it.”
South Bend coach Kelsey Staats did a call time out of her own to try to stem the tide when the Indians’ lead shrunk to 8-6, but couldn’t will her team to find its rhythm again.
Staats said situations like that have been the Achilles’ Heel of her team early in the season.
“We’re struggling with momentum right now. We’ve been talking about taking it one point at a time and trying not to get ahead of ourselves,” she said. We’re really young, so it’s been difficult finding leadership, but that’s something we’re looking to build on over the course of the season.”
Ocosta will be back in action on Wednesday at Naselle at 7 p.m.
South Bend continues their pursuit of their first win with a match at Raymond on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Staats said she is hoping to see a leader emerge to help her team defeat teams like Ocosta in the future.
“Anytime you play somebody in this league, it’s an opportunity to see what you’re working with because we play them a second time around for league,” she said. “I think we beat ourselves tonight. We have to find that one player amping everybody up.”

Willapa Valley also benefited from a good defensive game from Olivia Betrozoff, who had 17 digs in the contest.
Vikings head coach Karisa Hodel said her team is starting to head in the right direction as they learn to play together.
“We’re still working in our serve receive but they’re getting more comfortable with each other because this is a different kind of team,” he said. “We’re kinda young because not a lot of them got playing time. they’re coming along pretty well.”
Raymond’s record drops to 1-3 with the loss and will try to bounce back with a home match against South Bend at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

The Grizzlies got solid game out of middle blocker Carsyn Munger, who had 11 kills in the loss.
Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said her team struggled to connect on passes against a Rochester team that was doing a good job of extending rallies.
“We had a really hard time passing the ball tonight. We had a lot of serve-receive errors and mental mistakes,” she said. “Rochester was very scrappy and got everything back while we would be back on our heels, not ready to play the ball.”

Montesano picked a road victory against a 2A opponent with a 3-1 win over Centralia on Tuesday night.

Bulldogs head coach Pat Pace said his team did well capitalizing on scoring opportunities but is still looking for bit more hustle on defense.
“Six players shared in the 38 kills for the night, but the team still had a difficult time focusing and moving most of the night on the court,” he said. “Emma Kahler delivered key kills in Game 4 to help gain the momentum and shut the Tigers down to win the match.”

Montesano will face Hoquiam at Hoquiam Square Garden at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Kings Way Christian 3, Elma 1
Playing their second game in as many nights, the Elma Eagles struggled to get going in a 3-1 loss to Kings Way Christian on Tuesday in Vancouver.
One day after defeating Centralia at home, Elma struggled in the opening sets, losing 25-21 and 25-19 to fall behind 2-0.
But Elma (4-2) found its footing in the third set, winning 25-23.
The Knights (4-0) responded by edging Elma 25-21 in the fourth set to take the match, 3-1.
“The first two games were really slow. We came out flat and didn’t have a ton of energy,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “I’m sure playing back-to-back games was a factor. It’s not our preference as coaches to focus on that, but we have to find a way to fight through it.”
Elma was led by Jalyn Sackrider for the second straight game. The senior middle blocker had 19 kills, 15 digs and four blocks to lead the Eagles.
Outside hitter Quin Mikel added 10 kills and 17 digs while setter Ella Moore had more than 30 assists for the second consecutive game with 31.
Dunn said though she would have liked to see her team start with more energy, she felt they showed some fight in the loss.
“They played hard and fought for every point in the third and fourth sets,” she said. “It was nice to see them flip their mindset and come out stronger than what they previously played.”

GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Montesano 5, Centralia 0
Anna Ayres and Brooke Streeter provided all the offense Montesano needed as the Bulldogs trounced Centralia 5-0 on Tuesday at Centralia High School.
Ayres scored a hat trick and Streeter played a part in all of Monte’s goals as the Bulldogs dominated from start to finish.
Ayres scored in the 27th, 45th and 77th minutes, all off assists from Streeter.
Streeter scored two goals, one in the 47th minute off an assist from Jaiden Morrison and netted an unassisted goal in the 58th minute.
Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said he liked what he saw from Ayres and Streeter on Tuesday.
“I like the fact they’re starting to find each other and have some chemistry between them,” he said. “In the second half, they had so much more movement with a lot of offensive space and they were creating.”
Sanchez also noted an improved Bulldogs defense, which played a big part in shutting down the Centralia attack.
“Defensively, we were able to cut off a lot of their attacks and pressured the ball quickly,” he said. “We had players winning the ball back five to seven seconds after losing it. We caused a lot of turnovers and got the ball to your outside midfielders making runs.”
Montesano (4-2) hosts Hoquiam in its league opener at 7 p.m on Tuesday.

Elma 1, King’s Way Christian 1
A late goal by Jillian Bieker gave Elma a hard-fought 1-1 draw against King’s Way Christian on Tuesday in Vancouver.
Elma (1-2-2) fell behind 1-0 after a Knights goal midway through the first half.
The Eagles remained a goal down until the final minutes of the game, when Bieker corralled a throw-in by fellow senior Kaelyn Burgher inside the penalty area and sent a hard line-drive shot to the top corner to tie the game in the 78th minute.
Elma head coach Evan Valentine said he’d like to see his team play with more energy to start the game, but was pleased to see how his team made the plays they needed to down the stretch to earn the draw.
“We just needed to play with urgency and we didn’t do that to my liking for three quarters of the game,” he said. “We really controlled the game, we just needed to play with that extra effort that finally brought us that goal. I think the girls felt that urgency and they wanted to get it done.”
Elma hosts WF West at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
