GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
South Bend 52, North Beach 30
South Bend got off to a hot start and never looked back in a 52-30 victory over North Beach on Tuesday in South Bend.
The Indians (6-7 overall, 6-5 Pacific 2B) opened the game on a 10-0 run and held a 34-12 lead by halftime.
Multiple steals by Alise Rohr, Reece Williams and Elli Capps led to easy transition baskets for South Bend.
But the Indians came out sluggish on offense to start the third quarter, allowing North Beach (2-11, 2-9) to cut into the South Bend lead as the Hyaks won the quarter 11-8.
While South Bend’s offense slowed — scoring the same amount of points in the entire second half (18) as they did in the second quarter alone — the Indians defense remained constant, holding North Beach to 18 points in the second half as the Hyaks were unable to get close enough to threaten.
Three Indians scored in double figures, led by Rohr’s 12 points. Williams and Zaira Medina scored 10 points apiece for South Bend.
The Indians also got balanced scoring from Hannah Jewell, Brooklynne Johnson and Capps, each of whom scored six points in the game.
“We came fired up to play and from the tip-off the girls took control of the game,” South Beach head coach Randy Carlson said. “We, the coaches, have been wanting them to run the floor effectively and tonight they did for lay-in after lay-in. Having three girls reach double figures should give us some much needed confidence.”
North Beach, a team with just one senior on the roster, was led by sophomore Skyler Langston, who scored 14 points in the game.
Weather causes multiple postponements
The snowy, wet weather caused a majority of postponements on Tuesday, with most events being rescheduled later in the week or early next week.
Aberdeen, Montesano, Elma, Willapa Valley, Raymond and Ocosta all had games rescheduled to later make-up dates.
