Montesano picked up its second win of the season with a 53-48 victory over Napavine on Tuesday at Montesano High School.
The Bulldogs (2-1 overall) struggled from the floor as they work out some early-season kinks.
Similar to its loss on Saturday to Nooksack Valley, Montesano had trouble handling Napavine’s pressure defense in scoring just 25 points in the first half to lead by three at the break.
“They create a lot of havoc and chaos,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said of the Tigers’ defense.
Monte shot just 33% from the field on 16-of-49 shooting, but got to the line 33 times as a team, converting 20 foul shots (61%).
Tied 35-all entering the fourth quarter, Monte’s free-throw shooting and defense proved to be key. The Bulldogs went 10-for-14 (71%) from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and made several stops on defense down the stretch to earn the victory.
“We did a nice job at the line to keep them at bay,” said Mansfield, who added the Tigers hit nine 3-pointers in the game to stay within striking distance. “They were tenacious and kept after us the whole game. … But our defense stepped up late in the fourth quarter. … Wasn’t necessarily our best night, but it was against good competition and we found a way to pull it out in the fourth quarter. I’m really proud of our effort tonight.”
Montesano senior forward McKynnlie Dalan led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 18 rebounds for a double-double.
Monte senior guards Jaiden King and Maia Young scored 10 and eight points, respectively, and junior forward Mikayla Stanfield and freshman forward Evanjillie “Jillie” Dalan scored seven points apiece.
Young added four assists with Jillie Dalan chipping in with seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Montesano faces Columbia-White Salmon on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Columbia High School.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Castle Rock 47, Montesano 37
A Montesano comeback attempt fell short in a 47-37 loss to Castle Rock on Tuesday at Castle Rock High School.
Montesano (0-3) fell behind by as much as 13 points in the first half and trailed 24-14 at halftime before rallying behind Tyce Peterson’s team-leading 14 points and Cam Taylor’s play in the paint with seven points.
Using its press defense, Montesano trimmed Castle Rock’s lead to six points late in the third quarter, but was unable to pull any closer in suffering its third straight loss to open the season.
“Their 2-3 trap zone flustered our boys a little bit,” Montesano head coach Mack Bertram said of his team’s second-quarter struggles before commenting on the second-half comeback. “It came down to us being a little too late in turning it on.”
Montesano will host Columbia-White Salmon at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Raymond 56, Ocosta 44
Raymond got out to a big lead in the first half then held on for a 56-44 victory over Ocosta on Tuesday in Westport.
Raymond (2-1, 1-0 2B Pacific) used a pass-and-cut offense to great success in the first half, leading 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and by 16 at the half.
Ocosta (0-3, 0-2) struggled to find a rhythm on offense against the Seagulls’ 2-3 zone.
“Raymond was definitely the aggressor from the start,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “We started off this game by digging ourselves a giant hole.”
Quinby said he challenged his team at halftime to “work harder on defense and stay in front of the cutters” in the second half.
The strategy worked as the Wildcats trimmed the deficit to five points late in the fourth quarter, but Raymond hit clutch shots down the stretch and untimely fouls by Ocosta helped the Seagulls close out the game.
“We always seem to struggle at Ocosta, so I’m happy to come out with a win,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “We still have a lot to work on, but I think we’re headed in the right direction.”
Raymond was led by high-scoring senior Morgan Anderson, who scored a game-high 24 points that included 16-of-20 (80%) from the free-throw line.
Anderson added 10 rebounds and six steals in a double-double performance.
Talan Yearout (11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Chris Quintana (2, pts., 4 reb., 3 ast., 5 stl.) also had solid floor games for the Seagulls.
Ocosta was led by Xander Prigmore (10 pts., 9 reb., 4 ast., 2 stl.), Kayden Turner (9 pts.) and Josh Figueroa (7 pts., 7 reb., 7 ast., blk.).
Raymond hosts Ilwaco at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Ocosta plays at Pe Ell at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Willapa Valley 56 Columbia Adventist 48
Willapa Valley overcame some first-game rust to pick up an important 56-48 league victory over Columbia Adventist Academy on Tuesday in Menlo.
The Vikings (1-0 overall, 1B Columbia Valley) surprisingly got off to a hot start in jumping out to an early lead in the first few minutes of the game, but fatigue and physical play took its toll.
With Willapa Valley leading 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, the two teams combined for just 15 points in the second period of what Vikings head coach Jay Pearson called “a very physical game on both sides.”
“I was prepared for a transition from football, but I wasn’t prepared for that,” he said. “It was ugly.”
The Kodiaks (1-2, 1-1) cut Willapa Valley’s 25-13 halftime lead to just five points at 38-33 after a third quarter in which the Vikings came out “flat-footed,” according to Pearson.
Behind a game-high 29 points from senior Wil Clements, the Vikings held on for the 56-48 win.
“The kids played hard and got tired but persevered,” Pearson said of his team.
Willapa Valley shot 19-for-62 (31%) from the field, including 5-for-22 (23%) from beyond the arc and hit 13-of-21 (62%) from the free-throw line.
In addition to Clements, senior Derek Fluke also had a big game, recording a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds to go along with three steals.
Riley Pearson added 10 points with Garrett Keeton scoring four points, dishing out four assists and grabbing nine rebounds for the Vikings.
