After a scoreless first half, it appeared as though the Hoquiam Grizzlies may have been headed to their third straight tie game to start the season.
But Grizzlies senior midfielder Yazmin Garcia-Lopez had something to say about that.
Garcia-Lopez’s Olympico — a goal scored with a corner kick — early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Grizzlies defeated Rochester 1-0 on Tuesday in Hoquiam.
In the 42nd minute of the game, Hoquiam (1-0-2 overall) was awarded a corner kick and Garcia-Lopez used the opportunity to send a high, bending shot toward the far post. The ball tucked into the top corner of the net to give Hoquiam a 1-0 lead.

The Grizzlies defense held the Warriors (1-4) scoreless the rest of the way to record the shutout and give Hoquiam its first win of the season after two consecutive ties to Ocosta and Onalasaka.
Hoquiam’s defense has allowed just three goals in three games this season.
“We played hard tonight,” said Hoquiam head coach John Johnson, adding he would have liked to have seen his team get more shots on-goal. “They fought hard throughout the game and I am pleased with how they worked together better in the second half.”
The Grizzlies will face the Elma Eagles in a 1A Evergreen League match at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Hoquiam.

Black Hills 1, Aberdeen 0
A goal in the first overtime proved to be the game-winner in Aberdeen’s 1-0 loss to Black Hills on Tuesday in Tumwater.
Aberdeen (2-1, 1-1 2A Evergreen) allowed a goal after a Black Hills player got a head on the ball in a mad scramble in front of the Bobcats’ goal. Aberdeen senior goal keeper Dominique Trevino got a hand on the ball but not enough of it to keep it from going across the line.
In the defensive-minded game, Aberdeen’s best chance to score came when a Maddi Gore shot ricocheted off the crossbar in the second half.
“We played a solid game and were getting many chances and possession in the final third, but just couldn’t get one in,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Great hustle overall from the girls tonight.”
Fleming cited the play of Gore, Marina Marll, Aili Scott and Aman Cheema.
The Aberdeen JV team lost 2-0 on Tuesday, with Fleming stating Lila Erikson and Esmerelda Vega “played well for the Bobcats.”
Aberdeen will hold its long-awaited home-opener when it hosts Rochester at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Elma’s Traden Carter and Montesano’s Trey Sweeney won co-Medalist of the Match honors with identical scores of 42 over nine holes of golf.
