Five was a magic number for the Aberdeen softball team in its 2A District 4 pigtail game against Mark Morris High School on Tuesday.

Laynie Yakovich drove in five runs and Aili Scott scored five runs to lead Aberdeen to an 11-3 victory over Mark Morris on Tuesday in Longview.

Needing a victory to advance to the 2A District 4 Tournament and keep its season alive, Aberdeen (12-8 overall) jumped on the Monarchs (9-11) early.

Scott and Hailey Wilson opened the game with walks and came around to score on a Maddi Gore single followed by a Yakovich RBI groundout.

Gore later scored on a passed ball to give Aberdeen an early 3-0 lead.

Aberdeen took a 4-0 lead in the second when Yakovich — aboard with a leadoff single — scored on a two-out error.

Monarch Mckenzie Verdorn doubled to drive in a run against Aberdeen starter Abby Mainio in the bottom of the second, but the Bobcats starter got the next two batter to end the frame.

Aberdeen kept the pressure on, scoring two runs on a Gore sacrifice fly followed by a Yakovich RBI single in the fourth and three in the sixth on a Wilson single and two-run double by Yakovich.

With two outs in the sixth, the Monarchs scored a run on a Hallie Watson single.

Verdorn followed with a single to score Brooklyn Hoffman. Watson rounded third and was waved home on the play, but Scott game up firing, throwing a bullet to catcher Annie Boyle, who swept the tag onto Watson to end the sixth and cause an eruption from the Aberdeen faithful.

Gore drove in a run on another sac fly followed by Yakovich driving home Scott with a single to put Aberdeen up 11-3 in the seventh.

Mainio pitched a scoreless seventh to end the game and keep Aberdeen’s season alive.

”I’m very proud of the way the team has came together in these past couple weeks,” Aberdeen head coach Jimmy McDaniel said. “The energy in the dugout was amazing. Our team came out to play.”

Yakovich went 3-for-5 with a double and drove in five runs while Scott was 3-for-4 with a double and five runs scored from her leadoff spot.

“Aili Scott was everywhere on the bases and Laynie Yakovich was a monster at the plate tonight,” McDaniel said. “Offensively, we were strong at the plate tonight. Everyone was patient and constantly moving the runners.”

Aberdeen’s defense also sparkled on Tuesday, committing just one error while Scott made several spectacular plays from her spot in right field. In addition to the aforementioned throw home to get Watson out in the sixth, Scott made a running catch to rob Emily Foytack of an extra-base hit to leadoff the second.

”Defensively, we took care of the ball, securing big catches in the outfield,” McDaniel said. “The infield was fire when it came to balls that were hit their way. In the air or on the ground, they were gobbling everything up.”

Mainio picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits in place of standout pitcher Lilly Camp, who is likely out for the season due to injury.

Aberdeen will take on the district’s top seed — the Ridgefield Spudders — at 4 p.m. on Friday at Rec Park.
