Hoquiam’s offense produced plenty of runs en route to a 17-7 five-inning victory over Elma on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Grizzlies (7-4 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen) had 13 base hits as a team – five for extra bases – and benefited from seven Elma errors to earn the 1A Evergreen League victory.

Things started off well for the Eagles (6-4, 2-2) as Brooklyne Swarts drove in Mia Monroe with an RBI single followed by first baseman Callie Galligan blasting a two-run shot to center field for a 3-0 lead after one half-inning.

Hoquiam responded with three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the first capped by a Macy Dhooghe two-run triple.

The Grizzlies seized control with seven runs in the second, highlighted by run-scoring doubles from pitcher Carron Blood and left fielder Ashlinn Cady, taking a 10-0 lead into the third inning.

Elma scored a pair of runs on four straight walks followed by an RBI single from pitcher Madison Monroe to cut the Grizzlies’ lead to 10-5 heading to the fourth inning.

The Eagles cut the deficit to 10-6 after Swarts drove in a a run with a single in the top of the fifth, but Hoquiam responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. Chloe Dietrick drove in a run with a double followed by an RBI single off the bat of shortstop Graci Bonney-Spradlin.

Second baseman Ella Folkers followed with an RBI fielder’s choice grounder. Later in the frame, Bonney-Spradlin scored on a passed ball and Blood drove in the Grizzlies’ 15th run with a double to right field.

Hoquiam earned the walk-off, mercy-rule win when DeVona Sansaver and Faith Prosch came in to score on Elma’s seventh error of the game.

Blood earned the win, allowing seven runs – six earned – on eight hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Dietrick led Hoquiam with a perfect 4-for-4 stat line, including a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Blood went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI with Cady going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Madison Monroe took the loss for Elma, giving up 17 runs on 13 hits with three walks and a strikeout. Monroe didn’t get much help from her defense as only eight of the 17 runs she surrendered were earned.

With the win, Hoquiam holds a one-game lead over Montesano for the top spot in the league.

Hoquiam will face Montesano in a key league matchup at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Hoquiam’s John Gable Park.

Elma plays at Eatonville at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Montesano’s offense continued to dominate opposing pitching in a 16-0 mercy-rule win over Tenino on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (9-2, 3-1 1A Evergreen) wasted no time in putting runs on the scoreboard. Monte scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first sparked by an RBI triple off the bat of Jordan Karr for a 1-0 lead and capped with Karr’s second triple of the innings to drive Ember Jones with the Bulldogs’ 10th run.

Kennedy Hatton hit a sacrifice fly to score Karr and put Monte up 11-0 after one frame.

The Bulldogs added five more runs in the second, taking a 16-0 lead when Kennedy Campbell drove in Liv Robinson with a single to left field.

Riley Timmons picked up the win, no-hitting the Beavers (2-6, 0-3) with two walks and six strikeouts over three innings of work.

Monte had 10 hits – led by Karr (2-2, 2 3B, 2 R, 4 RBI), Hatton (2-2, 2B, R, 3 RBI) and Alyssa Maldonado (2-2, 2 R, RBI) – five of which were for extra bases.

Montesano takes on Hoquiam at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Hoquiam.

Aberdeen’s impressive 2023 campaign continued with another shutout victory over a league foe, beating Black Hills 3-0 on Tuesday in Tumwater.

The Bobcats (11-0, 8-0 2A Evergreen) dominated possession from the get-go and opened the scoring when Elmer Torres scored off an assist from senior defensive leader Alan Avalos just before the end of the first half.

After halftime, Torres scored his second of the game assisted by seniors Gilberto Lopez and Giovanni Ambrogiani. Aberdeen senior midfielder Edwin Quintana gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead by receiving a Wolves goal kick and scoring from 25 yards out in the 68th minute.

“We are mixing our short and long passing, are winning the ball well and off the ball are getting much smarter about our supporting angles,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Besides leaving a lot of goals out there, I think it was a strong game overall for our squad.”

Aberdeen outshot Black Hills (6-7, 4-6) 16-2 to record the Bobcats’ eighth shutout of the season.

Aberdeen holds a comfortable 2.5-game lead over W.F. West and Tumwater for first place in the 2A Evergreen League.

Aberdeen hosts Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday.
