Wildcats sweep Warriors

PUYALLUP — Ocosta exploded offensively to sweep Chief Leschi in a Pacific 2B League doubleheader at Chief Leschi on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (3-1, 3-3) lit up the scoreboard to defeat the Warriors 14-0 in the first game and rolled to an 18-1 win in the nightcap. While the offense lit up the scoreboard, solid pitching performance ensured the wins.

Cole Hatton allowed just two hits as he pitched a five-inning shutout in the first game, while Brandon Harnden, Jayden Matthews and Kobe Beck combined for a five-inning no-hitter in the second contest. Hatton needed just 56 pitches to close out the Warriors, throwing 39 strikes. Beck threw 22 strikes out of the 30 pitches he needed to finish out the no-hitter.

“We continued doing a good job as a team of stringing hits together and we jumped on them early and finished it out early on the mound,” Ocosta head coach Mike Allton said. “We needed these games to get our confidence going at the plate and I think we got that done.”

Ocosta is off until after Spring Break when they host Life Christian on April 10.

MONTESANO — Connor Parkinson converted a true hat trick, scoring three goals in the first half, to guide Montesano to its first win of the season, a non-league triumph over Seton Catholic, at Rottle Field on Tuesday.

Parkinson scored in the 10th minute on an assist from Nicolai Vikkelsoe, in the 20th minute on a rebound off the Seton Catholic goalkeeper and a breakaway through ball in the 30th minute.

Vikkelsoe ended Monte’s scoring in the 50th minute when he finished a 1-2 give-and-go passing drill with Luis Muro with a chipped shot over the goalkeeper.

“It was a sweet goal,” Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said. “Both Nicolai and Luis were quick against the defenders. Connor was solid. This is a good win going into league. It’ll build some confidence.”

On Thursday, Montesano travels to rival Elma.

Eagles 2, Spartans 1

FORKS — Elma’s Trace Thompson made the most of the Eagles’ two penalty kicks to help lift Elma to victory over Forks in an Evergreen 1A League match at Forks on Tuesday.

The Eagles (1-0, 2-4-1) earned a corner kick in the 13th minute. Carlos Bautista played in the kick and as Avery Brown went to head the ball, a Forks defender came in and was called for a handball in the box. Thompson blasted the ball home on the penalty kick for the early lead.

In the 20th minute, it was the Eagles who were called for a handball and Forks scored on a penalty kick to pull back to even.

Just six minutes later, a long ball was played over the top to Colin Decker-Hicks and as he was able to make a run on goal, he was taken down by a Forks defender just inside the box to earn another penalty kick. Thompson put the ball in once more to give the Eagles the lead for good.

“In the second half, we dominated play,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “We hit the crossbar twice and had multiple shots on goal. We took four corner kicks. We just couldn’t get it in. We never really gave them a chance to score. We kept the ball and kept pounding on them, but couldn’t score ourselves.”

Seaberg cited goalkeeper A.J. Hernandez for his performance in net, and Thompson for controlling play in the midfield and converting the penalty kicks.

Elma hosts Montesano on Thursday.

Grizzlies 11, Beavers 0

TENINO — Connor Darras tallied a hat trick in the first 23 minutes to power Hoquiam past Tenino in an Evergreen 1A League match on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies (1-0, 5-1) had six different players score as they rolled to victory. Darras notched goals in the fourth, 17th and 23rd minutes for a hat trick.

Alex Padilla added a goal in the 20th minute, while Naz Mazariegos got the first of his two goals just one minute later. Along with Mazariegos, Andy Garcia and Juventino Perez each scored two goals and Tigre Falla added his lone goal in the 37th minute.

Hoquiam is off for Spring Break until it travels to Montesano on April 11.

T-Birds 1, Bobcats 0

TUMWATER — Dominating play in possession and time inside the opponent’s defensive zone, Aberdeen was unable to crack Tumwater’s physical defense in an Evergreen 2A Conference loss at Tumwater Stadium on Tuesday.

The T-Birds scored the lone goal in the 32nd minute when a lofted pass found a spot in the Bobcats’ defense and was deflected off several players before entering the goal. Aberdeen outshot Tumwater, 16-5, and Tony Oropeza’s shot hit the crossbar in the first half.

“(Tumwater) was the most physical team we’ve played this year,” AHS head coach Larry Fleming said. “You have to match the intensity and we did that for the most part. We had a couple of one-on-ones and their goalkeeper saved them. He did a nice job. We still passed well. We were just unfortunate to not get one in.”

Robby Lewis, Trevor Dawkins and Anthony Churlin were cited for their defensive work.

Aberdeen JV lost, 1-0.

On Thursday, Aberdeen (0-1, 3-2) hosts Chehalis.
