Seagulls 50, Ducks 43
TUMWATER — Raymond officially punched its ticket into the 2B state tournament field with a win over Toutle Lake in a District IV 2B tournament game at Black Hills on Tuesday.
The Seagulls (21-3) rallied from a 10-point deficit at halftime to overtake the Ducks in the fourth quarter and seal the victory.
The rally started with a defensive switch at halftime. Raymond changed from a zone defense to a man-to-man attack and were able to limit the damage Toutle Lake could do from 3-point range. The Gulls also owned the boards with a 37-28 margin in rebounding.
“(Toutle Lake) came out in the first quarter and hit four threes, then they hit two more in the second quarter,” Raymond coach Jason Koski said. “In the second half, we changed our defensive focus. We played real solid and did a nice job of keeping the ball in front and we rebounded the ball well.”
The win secured the Gulls one of the top-six spots in the district tournament and a regional berth. However, because Raymond also owns the No. 4 seed in the RPI rankings, win-or-lose in the regional round, the Gulls will automatically be one of the 12 teams at the state tournament in Spokane.
“We are senior laden and they have always been real close and for them it is really neat to see them be excited about what they have accomplished and get to that next hurdle for their career,” Koski said.
Raymond was paced by 14 points each from Winter Newman and Cydney Flemetis. Makenna Williams finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Mikayla Collins grabbed 13 rebounds and added seven points for Raymond.
Raymond will face Ilwaco at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Rochester High School.
