Tuesday Soccer Roundup: Aberdeen out after second district playoff loss

One of the better Aberdeen girls soccer seasons in recent memory ended on Tuesday after the Bobcats lost 2-1 (4-3 on penalty kicks) to Washougal in a 2A District 4 Tournament elimination game at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (11-5 overall) played an even game with the Panthers (8-10), with both teams getting chances in the first half and throughout the beginning of the second half.

With 23 minutes left in the game, a foul call just outside the 18-yard box went against Aberdeen. Washougal scored on the free kick to go up 1-0.

In stoppage time, Aberdeen pressured to score the tying goal and keep its season alive.

The Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball in the box. Aberdeen’s Scotlyn Lecomte took the penalty shot and had her kick blocked by the Panthers keeper, but senior forward Maddi Gore hustled to the ball and scored to tie the game, sending it into overtime.

After neither team scored in overtime, the game went to a penalty-kick shootout.

Aberdeen’s Abby Mainio, Zoe Troeh and Britt Rajcich converted their PK shots.

Gore subbed into the net as Aberdeen was still without the goal-keeping services of starter Dom Trevino and backup Jaylynn Phimmasone due to injuries.

Gore got her hands on two Washougal shots, but not enough to keep them out of the net as the Panthers ended Aberdeen’s season 4-3 on penalty kicks.

“Great effort once again, but the ball doesn’t always bounce the way you want it to,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Outstanding season for our squad. The girls should be very proud of all they accomplished this year.”

Its 11-5 record was Aberdeen’s best since going 12-5 in 2015.

Onalaska 4, Ocosta 1

Ocosta’s season came to an end after a 4-1 loss to Onalaska in the first round of the 2B District 4 Tournament on Tuesday in Onalaska.

Ocosta (8-8-1) tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh minute when Miki Ness assisted on a goal from Kylee Denny, who was playing in her first game back from injury after being out for the past six weeks.

Onalaska (8-4-2) scored on a breakaway in the closing seconds of the half to take a 2-1 lead despite being outshot by the Wildcats 11-6.

The Loggers scored in the 47th and 61st minutes to secure the victory and end Ocosta’s season.

“We put in a terrific effort, we just couldn’t get the ball into the net,” Ocosta head coach Mike King lamented. “Onalaska moved well to the ball when it was in the goal area and that was the difference. I give our girls credit for never giving up and for a great season.”

King cited Denny on her return to the pitch, Ness on closing out her stellar prep career in a Wildcats uniform, and sweeper Kennedy Reynolds, who left the game in the first half due to injury but returned in the second half.
