On the few occasions they were pressed, Aberdeen’s swimmers predictably answered the challenge.
Winning a couple of tight races in addition to their standard lopsided victories, the Bobcats remained unbeaten with a 130-56 rout of Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls swim meet Wednesday at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.
Aberdeen freshman Anna Weber had a hand in four victories. She lowered her previous state-qualifying times in capturing the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.43) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.86).
She was a member of a 200-yard medley relay team — also including Mackayla Waltee, Kayleia Sias and Karli Heikkila — that (with a mark of 1:58.56) that narrowly missed bettering a previous state qualifying time. Weber’s fourth win came when she joined Heikkila, Sias and Melissa May on the victorious 400 free relay unit.
Black Hills had actually won the majority of events in a previous meet against Aberdeen, although the Bobcats had easily prevailed on depth. Bobcat coach Jan Simons said she had re-arranged her standard lineup on that occasion.
This time, the Bobcats won 9 of the 12 events. The Wolves had enough top-end power, however, to provide stiff competition in a couple of them.
Weber trailed by about a half body-length entering the final lap of the 100 fly, but turned it on down the stretch by edge Black Hills’ Rylee Denney by three-tenths of a second.
Bobcat sophomore Sias maintained a narrow lead over the final 25 yards to nip Black Hills’ Emma Prybylski by a half second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.47.
Aberdeen’s less dramatic individual wins came from Heikkila in the 100 freestyle, Katie Lewis in the 200 free and Annetthe Orona in the 100 breaststroke. Heikkila barely missed state-qualifying times in that event and the 50 free.
Simons called it a good overall performance.
“The girls are stepping up and rising to the occasion,” said the Aberdeen coach. “We’re ahead of where we were last year, both in practice and here (in meets).”
May, Juliana Meza and Rylee Watson were among others who drew Simons’ praise for fine performances.
