The Raymond Seagulls had upset on their minds, but top-ranked Kalama proved to be too much in the end.

Raymond rallied to take a second-half lead but eventually fell to the No. 1 Chinooks 62-49 in a 2B District 4 quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday at Castle Rock High School.

Raymond (13-6 overall) trailed early on, falling behind 20-9 after the first quarter.

But the Seagulls cut two points off the deficit by halftime to trail 30-21 to stay within striking distance heading to the second half.

Raymond rallied in the third quarter to take a 35-34 lead, but Kalama (17-1) responded with a 12-2 run to claim a 46-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Chinooks kept Raymond at arm’s length the remainder of the contest, earning a trip to the semifinals and relegating the Seagulls to the consolation round in the process.

“Kalama is a very good basketball team. We struggled in the first quarter and put ourselves in a position to have to fight our way back. I was proud of our kids for fighting back,” said Raymond head coach Derek Rask, adding Kalama’s physical play and rebounding were keys to the game. “(Kalama) played physical defense and we struggled to score against them. … We were getting out rebounded for most of the game and we gave them too many second and third chance opportunities. You just can’t do that against a team like Kalama.”

Senior guard Tre’ Seydel had a double-double for the Seagulls. The all-state candidate scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds against one of the top defenses in the state.

Raymond’s Morgan Anderson and Adrian Quintana also finished in double digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Raymond still has a chance to earn a trip to the state playoffs in the stacked 2B District 4 Tournament. The Seagulls will face Toutle Lake in an elimination game at 6 p.m. Friday at Black Hills High School.

Toutle Lake 69, Ocosta 36

Ocosta’s season came to an end with a 69-36 loss to Toutle Lake in an elimination game of the 2B District 4 Tournament on Wednesday at Black Hills High School.

The Wildcats (6-15) and Ducks (12-7) battled to a stalemate 8-8 tie at the end of the first quarter.

Then things began to go sideways for Ocosta, namely due to Toutle Lake’s 2-2-1 press defense. Ocosta was outscored 20-4 in the second quarter as the Ducks’ full-court press caused turnovers were converted into easy points for the Ducks.

“From that point on, we were trying to play catch up and just didn’t have the scoring punch to make it happen,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said.

Toutle Lake outscored Ocosta 41-24 over the final 16 minutes of the game.

Mark Lewis led Ocosta with 12 points and nine rebounds.

“We did achieve our goal of playing intense, physical half-court defense, which is something we have struggled with and I thought offensively we were much better setting screens and using our bodies to get into the defenders,” Quinby said. “Our downfall was just our inability to handle the press. I’m looking forward to the off-season as all my players return and after getting a taste of playoff basketball are primed to hit the weight room and get ready for the summer leagues.”
