FORKS — Led by 16 points from Dani Buckman, Aberdeen defeated Forks in a non-league game at Forks on Wednesday.
The Bobcats (1-0) held the Spartans scoreless in the second quarter and held on for the win in their season opener.
“The second was a good quarter defensively,” Aberdeen coach Jeff Niemi said. “We were rotating and getting stops. Our transition offense was how we got the majority of our buckets. They played zone the whole game and we struggled at times offensively.”
Niemi cited Buckman for her leadership and Reagan Glanz and Mari Rabung for playing hard through injuries.

ONALASKA — It took a little extra patience, but Montesano defeated Onalaska in a non-league game at Onalaska on Wednesday.
Tied 23-23 at halftime, the Bulldogs (1-0) slowed down on offense and jumped ahead by nine at the end of the third quarter to beat the Loggers.
“Our first half was a little sloppy and then our second half was a little better as far as offensive patience and figuring out how to play together,” Monte coach Doug Galloway said. “We jumped on them in the third quarter and just stayed ahead from there. We just started playing solid defense and on offense we were just more patient. We were going through more than just our first option of offense.”
L.J. Valley led the Bulldogs with 21 points, while Seth Dierkop added 10 points and eight rebounds. Nick Chapman dished out four assists.
Galloway cited freshmen Tanner Nicklas and Sam Winter for their play coming off the bench. Winter finished with nine points on the night.

WESTPORT — locked in a back-and-forth contest, it was Ocosta’s defense that helped the Wildcats defeat Winlock in a non-league game on Wednesday.
The Wildcats (2-0) forced 27 turnovers to literally take the game out of the Cardinals clutches. Ocosta made the most of the defensive effort with good ball movement and transition offense.
“Our key was just to continue to push the ball and get after them on defense,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “We forced a lot of turnovers and cut down on our turnovers. Playing faster but taking care of the ball. We had 15 assists on 21 buckets. Just good team basketball tonight.”
Ocosta’s Zach Allton led all scorers with 20 points and added seven steals and six assists. Cole Hatton scored 13 points for the Wildcats, while Alex Bailey added 12 points. Bailey and Derek Thomas each swiped five steals. Paul Bjornsgard had a solid night with nine rebounds, four points and four steals.

FORKS — Forks controlled the paint to come away with the victory over Aberdeen in a non-league contest at Forks on Wednesday.
The Spartans used a 2-3 zone with 6-foot-9 Marky Adams at center to keep the Bobcats away from the basket and errant shooting by Aberdeen led to Forks building a 14-point lead at halftime and an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter. Aberdeen chipped away and cut the lead to five before the final horn sounded, but the Bobcats couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
“You have to give credit where credit is due and they have done a good job getting the team ready to go,” Aberdeen coach Mark Buckman said. “We came back out and brought some pretty good energy and more pressure in the second half, but they did the things that they needed to do and we came up short at the end.”
Despite being seven inches short than Adams, Braden Castleberry-Taylor went toe-to-toe with the Spartan center and finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Victor Gomez added 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Bobcats, while Ben Dublanko scored 10 points during his first game at point guard. Brayden Roiko swiped four steals to go with seven points.
