The Aberdeen Bobcats girls swim team posted a dozen qualifying marks in a 99-82 victory over Black Hills on Wednesday at the Grays Harbor YMCA in Hoquiam.

In their 2A Evergreen League and home-opener, the Bobcats earned a dozen qualifying marks at the meet, led by junior swimmer Anna Matisons, who qualified for the state meet with a winning time of 1:13.14 in the 100 yard breaststroke.

In addition to Matisons accomplishment, Aberdeen recorded 10 district-qualifying times and had one diver record a district-qualifying mark on Wednesday.

Matisons also qualified for the district meet with a time of 1:09.41 in the 100 freestyle, joining teammate Keara Burns, who placed one spot ahead of Matisons in second place with a time of 1:07.35.

Burns joined teammates Kennedy Hatton and Katelyn Ancich in qualifying for districts in the 50 freestyle. Burns (29.62), Hatton (29.78) and Ancich (30.36) placed second through fourth, respectively, in the race.

Hatton also qualified in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:53.83 to place second.

Freshman Mija Hood qualified in both the 100 backstroke (1:08.27, 1st) and 200 freestyle (2:20.90, 2nd) with fellow Bobcats freshman Ava Benn qualifying in the 200 Individual Medley (3:03.15, 4th).

Aberdeen junior Litzy Orona won the 200 Individual Medley with a district-qualifying time of 2:36.58.

Ancich qualified for districts in the 1 Meter Dive with a score of 150.95 to place second.

In all, Aberdeen won six of 12 events in a close meet against a solid Black Hills squad.

“The girls had a wonderful time at our first home meet of the season,” said Aberdeen head coach Tiffany Montoure, who took over for legendary coach Jan Simons at the end of last season. “In a crazy world of sports, everyone showed up at the pool today.”

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Ocosta 3, Toutle Lake 0

In a game that was played with nine players per side for the majority of the match, the Ocosta Wildcats defeated Toutle Lake for a 3-0 win on Wednesday in Westport.

The two teams started with 10 per side until a Toutle Lake player took a ball off the head and had to leave the game for concussion protocols, which meant both teams were reduced to nine players per side.

No bother for the Wildcats, which out shot the Ducks by a staggering 53-5 with 25 shots on goal.

Maddie Schaeffer opened the scoring with a goal off a rebound in the 16th minute and Natalie Carloza made it 2-0 when she scored off a short pass in the 29th minute.

Despite 31 of their shots coming in the second half, Ocosta (3-1 overall) scored just one goal over the final 40 minutes on a Miki Ness breakaway.

Ocosta keepers Anna Davis and Mia Saunders combined for the shutout, with Davis — an eighth-grader — making three saves in the first half of her varsity debut.

“We came out firing, but our shots were high, wide or straight to the keeper,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We will continue to work on our finishing before we start our league season.”
