ELMA — Setting the tone with a 21-point first quarter, Elma opened its season by trouncing Adna in a non-league contest Wednesday at Elma.

The Eagles led 21-12 after one quarter and 31-20 at the half.

“Obviously, we had a great first quarter,” Elma coach Lisa Johnson said. “We came out with great energy. Our press was causing turnovers and we were converting.”

Junior post Molly Johnston had a double-double for Elma with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists and four blocked shots.

Jalyn Sackrider added 12 points and five blocks, while Quin Mikel pulled down 10 rebounds for the Eagles (1-0).

To compensate, Ocosta effectively applied full-court pressure on Wednesday, forcing 25 turnovers.

“Out of the 25 turnovers, we had 12 steals,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum noted. “The backcourt was really active tonight.”

Freshman Kjirstin Hopfer had four steals to go with her team-high 15 points. Katelyn Denny added 12 points and eight rebounds, while guards Hopfer, Alivia Marsh and Layne Martin grabbed five rebounds each. Marsh led Ocosta in steals with five.
