Hoquiam 12, Raymond-South Bend 2
Hoquiam had no trouble handling Raymond-South Bend and came away with a 12-2 victory over the Riptide at Sea Breeze Oval in Hoquiam on Tuesday.
Hoquiam (5-5, 5-1 Evergreen 1A) got goals from Connor Darras, Cameron Bumstead, Jose Juarez and Bryan Cabrera in the first half to give the Grizzlies a 4-1 lead going into halftime.
The Grizzlies began connecting on some lead passes and scored three more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Hoquiam head coach Fidel Sanchez took the opportunity to get some members from the junior varsity roster some extra playing time when the outcome was no longer in doubt.
“They have to have fun too. A lot of teams don’t have a junior varsity team and it’s good for them to get some playing time because otherwise they (just) keep practicing,” he said. “It is very important for us to give them some playing time so they can enjoy the season.”
Hoquiam will take on Ilwaco tonight At 6.
Raymond-South Bend (3-4, 1-4) will be looking to snap its three-game losing streak when the Riptide face Tenino on the road at 7 tonight.
RSB coach Heather Cheek said she was impressed with her team attitude despite the lopsided score.
“I like that the team kept working. They didn’t drop their heads and they kept pushing forward, trying to create scoring chances,” she said. “I just love that they never quit.”

RSB 1 1 – 2

Montesano 5, Tenino 2
Montesano worked the ball through the middle of the field early on to build its lead on the way to a 5-2 road win over Tenino on Tuesday.
Lightning struck three times for Luis Muro who picked up the hat trick with goals in the 10th, 28th and 50th minutes.
Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said it was good to see his team adjust to what Tenino (1-5-1, 1-4 Evergreen 1A) was giving them on defense.
“We wanted to start out going wide, so we started attacking back up the middle and toward the second half they started taking the middle again and we went back out wide again,” he said. “We were trying to take what the defense was giving us.”
The win improves the Bulldogs’ record to 5-5 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Montesano will look to maintain its spot at the top of the league standings when the Bulldogs face Raymond-South Bend at 2 p.m. on Saturday in South Bend.
Montesano 3 2 – 5
Tenino 1 1 – 2

Aberdeen 2, Black Hills 1
Aberdeen showed signs of rust after an 11-day layoff, but the Bobcats recovered in time to earn a 2-1 league victory over Black Hills on Tuesday at Black Hills High School.
Black Hills (3-5, 1-2 Evergreen 2A) took the lead on its first shot of the game with just four minutes elapsed in the match.
Aberdeen (6-1-1, 3-1) immediately responded, controlling possession and driving into the Wolves’ defensive third of the field.
The Bobcats were rewarded for their aggressiveness when Antonio Torres scored off an assist from Miguel Martinez in the 22nd minute.
The game remained tied until two minutes left in regulation when Aberdeen forward Hulizes Chavez sent a through ball to Martinez, who beat the Wolves’ keeper with a low shot to the near post to give Aberdeen a 2-1 lead.
“We were not great at the outset, but we found our touch as the game progressed and put a lot of pressure on the Black Hills defense and goalkeeper the entire night, doing just enough to get the win,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said.
The win was a critical one for Aberdeen as the Bobcats are locked in a three-way tie for first place in the 2A Evergreen League with Tumwater and Centralia.
Aberdeen hosts Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Willapa Valley girls successful at 2A meet
Taking on 2A teams Rochester, Tumwater and WF West the Willapa Valley Vikings proved they could hold their own at a track and field meet on Tuesday in Chehalis.
Willapa Valley’s Hannah Cook was dominant the entire meet, claiming victories in three events. Cook swept both the girls hurdles races, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 16.16 and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.66. The senior speedster also won the triple jump with a 30 foot mark, besting teammate Oliva Betrozoff who took second with a mark of 29-10.50.
Cook wasn’t the only multiple-event winner to wear Vikings colors.
Thrower Hailee Layman won the shot put with a heave of 33-11 and claimed discus gold with a personal-best time of 130-07, beating WF West’s Brianna Powe by more than 30 feet.
Brooke Friese won two events for Willapa Valley. The dynamic senior took the top spot in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 13.47 — a season best — and followed that up with a leap of 10-feet flat to tie WF West’s Megan Flexhaug for the top spot in the pole vault.
In total, Willapa Valley’s girls took home nine first-place finishes and five second-place medals.
“It helped my kids realize that they put their shorts on the same way, one leg at time,” Willapa Valley head coach Dave Ege said. “And it was good to see them compete with some of the bigger schools.”
