1A District IV Tournament
Columbia-White Salmon 5, Montesano 2
Montesano let an early lead slip away in a 5-2 season-ending loss to Columbia-White Salmon in the consolation bracket of the 1A District IV Tournament on Wednesday at Seton Catholic High School.
The Bulldogs (8-10 overall) took an early lead in the first five minutes of the game when junior midfielder Joel Pine took a pass from Jordan King and tucked a shot inside the far post from the top of the 18-yard box.
After a CWS (9-6-1) tied the game on a header, Monte regained the lead when a Ben Royer through pass found the foot of senior forward Luis Muro, who got behind the Bruins back line and beat the keeper for a 2-1 lead in the 20th minute.
But that was the last lead Monte would hold, as CWS scored in the 30th and 35th minutes to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.
The Bruins extended their lead with a goal in the 65th minute in a back-and-forth second half, taking a 4-2 lead to put the Bulldogs’ season in jeopardy.
With Monte pressing up, the Bruins got an extra-time goal on a free kick from 18-yards out to seal the victory and end the Bulldogs’ 2019 campaign.
“I am very happy with this season,” Monte head coach Rick Denholm said. “We had quite a few players banged up but they gave everything they had on the field. They gave 100 percent of what they could give and that was always a positive thing.”
