FORKS — Kamimi Papp drove in four runs in the sixth inning alone to rally Hoquiam past Forks in an Evergreen 1A League opener Wednesday at Forks.

A five-run fifth inning gave Forks a 6-4 lead entering the sixth. But Papp tripled and doubled in that inning and the Grizzlies (1-0, 5-0) capitalized on walks to tally eight runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

“We were cruising along until the fifth and then we kind of hit a bump in the road,” HHS coach Keith Reynvaan said. “The kids responded really well in the sixth and seventh.”

Maddie German had four hits for Hoquiam. Reynvaan cited the play of Hailey Lawrence, a last-minute fill-in in the outfield who collected her first varsity hit.

Hoquiam hosts Montesano this afternoon.

TUMWATER — Falling short with a late rally, Aberdeen was edged by Tumwater in an Evergreen 2A Conference contest Wednesday.

An apparent two-run Bobcat homer that could have forced extra innings was nullified when the player was called out for missing first base.

Head coach Scott Wilson was not a fan of the call but said his team fought valiantly against one of the top teams in the league.

“All the girls hit the ball well today and we had a few costly mistakes but I told the kids we were right at the top of the mountain and it could go either way,” he said.

Wilson also highlighted Angel Jones for hitting.

The Bobcats (0-1, 2-3) will be back on the field at Chehalis today.

Makenna Williams went 4-for-4, including a home run, and drove in seven runs for Raymond in the first game. Incredibly, she lacked only a single of hitting for the cycle.

Izzy Silvernail had three hits for the Gulls (4-0, 6-0) in the second contest.

Jessy Garman and Mady Eang had five hits in the two contests for North Beach (0-2, 2-3).

Bulldogs sweep

MONTESANO — Ignited by the pitching and hitting of Evan Bates in the opening game, Montesano swept Forks, 5-1 and 10-4, in an Evergreen 1A League doubleheader Wednesday at Vessey Field.

Bates was the winning pitcher in the opening game and aided his own cause with a three-run homer.

Payson Parker drove in two runs and six other Bulldogs added one RBI in the second game.

On a day of solid offense, Monte head coach Mike Osgood said he was equally impressed by his pitchers.

“All four guys threw well but the defense made some mistakes behind them but we hit the ball well so I’ll take it,” he said.

Monte (2-0, 6-1) will face rival Hoquiam on Friday.

Wildcats sweep

WESTPORT — Ocosta had little difficulty sweeping Northwest Christian, 10-0 and 17-4, in a Pacific 2B League doubleheader Wednesday at GAR Park.

Jayden Matthews tripled twice in the opening game for the Wildcats (3-1, 4-1). Hayden Hoff and Kobe Beck combined on a two-hitter in that contest.

Cole Hatton went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs for Ocosta in the nightcap.

Facing an inexperienced Navigator team that featured 11 freshmen, Ocosta scored 15 runs in the first two innings of the second game and intentionally made outs later to ensure the game finished before darkness fell.

“We were patient at the plate and had timely hitting and that’s about all you can say,” Ocosta coach Mike Allton said.

The Wildcats travel to Raymond on Friday.

Bulldog boys win

TENINO — Capturing 12 events, Montesano’s boys dominated a three-school meet Wednesday at Tenino.

The Bulldogs amassed 145 points to finish more than 100 points ahead of Forks and Tenino. Forks won the girls meet with 99 points, 41 more than the Bulldogs.

Donovan Albert shared in four event wins for Montesano’s boys, winning the 200 and 400 meters and sharing in a couple of relay victories. Sam Winter won both hurdles and the triple jump.

L.J. Valley led a Bulldog sweep of the top four places in the shot, establishing a personal best of 45-2.

Monte coaches Brian Hollatz and Doug Schupbach cited Gage Iverson in the long jump and Tristan Bodwell in the distances.

“It was pretty dominant on our end,” Schupbach said, noting that Forks and Tenino are down in numbers this season. “In the field events, we’re pretty strong.”

Carly Spradlin was a double winner in the girls javelin and discus for Monte’s girls. Cori Fritts and Grace Bergstrom were also cited for their performances.

Several Bulldog girls sat out the meet due to illness and injury.

OLYMPIA — Talented Capital topped Aberdeen in a non-league contest Wednesday at Olympia.

Aleeta Pratt was the only Bobcat to come away with a victory winning in straight sets over Virginia Stacy.

Aberdeen head coach Ashley Kohlmeier said her team performed well against an experienced group of players.

“Aleeta worked through some awesome rallies to handle the singles one match,” she said. “I was also impressed with Kylie Knodel, whose score does not do her play justice.”

The Bobcats (2-1) were scheduled to host Montesano today.
