Wednesday Prep Roundup: Several Aberdeen swimmers qualify for state after first meet

It took just one meet for the prodigious Aberdeen girls swim team to send some athletes to the state meet.

Two Bobcats relay teams posted state-qualifying times as Aberdeen emerged victorious at its season-opening relay meet on Wednesday at the Grays Harbor YMCA.

Aberdeen’s 400-yard freestyle relay-team of Annika Eisele, Anna Weber, Melissa May and Annetthe Oroca swam a time of 3:58 to win the race and qualify for the state meet on Nov. 15 by two seconds.

Weber, May and Eisele joined Aliyah Tageant to swim a sub-two minute time of 1:59.28 to qualify for the state meet in the 200-yard medley relay, beating the qualifying time by nearly three seconds.

The Bobcats cruised to the team victory with 106 points, defeating second-place Capital High School by 32 points. Timberline placed third with 60 points followed by Tumwater (52), Black Hills (50) and WF West-Centralia (22).

Aberdeen won seven of the event’s 12 relay races and also placed second in the 800-yard freestyle relay behind Capital High School.

Bobcats senior Butcher Heikkila placed in the one-meter dive competition, scoring 115.85 points to finish second behind Timberline’s Snyder Babkirk (207.40).

Aberdeen travels to River Ridge High School to face Tumwater at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19 before hosting a 2A Evergreen League meet at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Kempe, Todd take first at Jamboree

Aberdeen’s Katharina Kempe and Ocosta’s Dylan Todd took the top spots at the Cross Country Jamboree at Vance Creek Park in Elma on Wednesday.

Todd placed first in the boys two-mile race, finishing with a time of 11:33, four seconds better than Rochester’s Levi Jennings. Aberdeen’s Joel Nelson placed third (12:16) followed by teammate Jesus Junco (12:20) and Hoquiam’s Jimmy Hagens (12:25) to round out the top five.

Kempe ran a time of 14:37 to cruise to victory in the girls two-mile race. The Aberdeen runner was followed by Ocosta’s Natalie Cain (15:06), Hoquiam’s Macie German (15:15), Aberdeen’s Skyler Tayler (15:17) and Hoquiam’s Jenny Cole (15:28).

PREP BOYS TENNIS

Capital 5, Aberdeen 0

The Aberdeen Bobcats had its struggles against an experienced Capital Cougars team, losing all five matches of Wednesday’s competition at Capital High School.

The Bobcats doubles team of Colby Miller and Colton Faulkner led 4-1 in a decisive third set against Capital’s John Merchant and Aiden Whitney, but eventually fell 6-4.

Aberdeen’s junior varsity team tied with Capital, 3-3.

The Bobcats host Timberline at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
