Wednesday Prep Roundup: Short-handed Ocosta falls to Toledo

Ocosta keeper Devyn Martin saves 17 of 18 shots in 1-0 loss.

An injury-ravished Ocosta roster held its own for 78 minutes before surrendering a goal in a 1-0 loss at Toledo on Wednesday.

Ocosta (3-5-1, 0-2 Pacific 2B) entered the game with an empty bench and 10 players on the field as seven members of the roster deal with injuries of varying severity.

The Wildcats played most of the first half with 10 players, which was further reduced to nine at halftime when a ball hit Meghan Denny’s hand, possibly breaking a bone.

Denny attempted to stay in the game when she originally believed her thumb was dislocated, but left the sidelines for the hospital when the severity of the injury was realized.

Ocosta head coach Mike King wasn’t disappointed with the result and walked away from Wednesday’s contest impressed with his team’s effort

“The girls stepped up tonight and it was unbelievable to watch them play,” he said. “They just came out and really worked hard.”

Wildcats goalkeeper Devyn Martin was particularly impressive with 17 saves in the contest. Most of Martin saves came on shots from outside the box, but the Indians created more dangerous scoring chances as the match continued and fatigue began to set in for short-handed Ocosta.

“They were running 80 minutes back and forth and helping on offense,” King said. “I mean, I’m surprised we got four shots on goal in the first half, playing with 10. Our midfielders got worn out and our defenders played unbelievable tonight.”

Martin parried away a shot labeled for the upper right hand corner of the goal in the 70th minute and dove to her right to knock a shot out of bounds in the 75th minute to keep her team locked in a scoreless tie for the time being.

Martin’s heroics in goal could only carry the team so far, however, as Toledo’s Marina Smith scored on a low, hard shot to the keeper’s left that gave the Indians (6-3, 1-1) the win late in regulation.

King said he is more concerned about getting his team back to full strength than he is dropping the game to a league opponent.

“We’re more concerned with getting the kids healed and healthy. We’re pretty assured that if we play our game we can make the playoffs and beat some of those teams we should have beat in the regular season. If we can get back to full strength we can compete with the best teams in the league.”

Though Denny’s status is still up in the air, Ocosta plans on being closer to full strength in approximately a week and is hoping to have at least one additional player ready to return when the Wildcats face Toutle Lake on Monday at 6 p.m in Ocosta.

The Wildcats also play Winlock on Oct.9 and King sees the upcoming matches as a chance to climb the standings.

“We’re playing some of the lower-seeded teams in the league, so if we come out and play hard against those guys we should be okay,” he said.
