MENLO — Limiting Naselle to single-digit scoring in every quarter, South Bend advanced to the girls title game of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic with a victory on Wednesday.

The Indians (6-3) face rival Willapa Valley in the title game at approximately 4 p.m.

Karley Reidinger had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals to pace South Bend. Jessica Sanchez contributed 10 points, seven boards and eight steals.

“Defensively, we did a good job of limiting good shots,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “It was a Christmas tournament game and we did have a few moments now and then. But overall, the girls stayed on task through the game.”

Katelyn Doyle handed out four assists for South Bend.

MENLO —Willapa Valley’s girls basketball team put together a solid effort in its first game back from the winter break to defeat Pe Ell on Wednesday and advance to the championship game of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic.

Willapa Harbor rivals Willapa Valley and South Bend will collide in the championship game this afternoon.

The Vikings (8-1) got things done on both ends of the floor, holding their opponents to under 30 percent shooting from the field and grabbing rebounds to limit second-chance points.

Vikings head coach Colby Rogers gave credit to his team’s defensive effort in the win and highlighted one of his players who helped set things up on offense.

“We played hard at the defensive end and rotated well. Cameron Swartz also did a really good job moving the ball in our offense and getting everything set up,” he said.

Swartz, along with Hannah Cook and Britney Patrick was one of three players in double digits for the Vikings.

LYNDEN — Outscoring Montesano 17-1 in the first quarter, King’s rolled past the Bulldogs on the opening day of Lynden Christian’s Cloud Nine tournament on Wednesday.

“We had a terrible start to the game,” Monte coach Julie Graves summarized. “The combination of King’s length on defense and hot shooting in the first quarter proved to be too much to overcome.”

The Bulldogs (7-3) shot 21 percent from the field and committed 29 turnovers.

Zoe Hutchings topped Montesano with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Samantha Stanfield had 10 boards and Zoee Lisherness nine.

The Bulldogs close out tournament play against Cedar Park Christian today.

KENT — Highly regarded Neah Bay used exceptional long-range shooting to beat Taholah in the Muckleshoot Classic on Wednesday at the Showare Center in Kent.

Neah Bay’s Laila Greene hit three of her five 3-point shots in the first quarter to set the tone.

“The difference in the game was they hit their threes,” Taholah coach Karl Braden said.

Nettie Mail scored 20 points for the Chitwhins (3-3), while Denise (Dolan) Curleybear added 16 points.

Braden was pleased that his team trimmed its turnovers from 33 in its last previous outing to 10 in this one. But the Chitwhins made only 5 of 15 free throws.

Taholah will face Tulalip Heritage in the opening round of the Lummi Classic on Thursday.

Chitwhins 68, Red Devils 38

KENT — Capitalizing heavily on Neah Bay turnovers, Taholah trounced the Red Devils in the Muckleshoot Classic on Wednesday at the Showare Center in Kent.

The Chitwhins (4-2) swiped 23 steals and turned many of them into transition baskets.

“We were just playing hard and aggressive,” Taholah coach Mike Rose said.

Zach Cain led a quartet of Taholah double-digit scorers with 17 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Jay Mowitch added 15 points and seven assists.

Jim Billie came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

The Chitwhins will compete in the Lummi Tournament Thursday and Friday, opening against Tulalip Heritage.

MENLO — Freshman Logan Walker scored 21 points as host Willapa Valley advanced to the boys final of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic with a victory over Pe Ell on Wednesday.

The Vikings (7-2) face Naselle for the championship at 5:30 p.m. today.

Wednesday’s victory was more decisive than the score indicated. The Vikings led 35-17 at the half and 55-29 at the three-quarter mark.

“Defensively, we played sound for three quarters,” Viking coach Jay Pearson said. “(Offensively), the execution and sharpness was not there tonight. That was typical of winter ball.”

Matt Pearson scored 12 points and Ryon Ashley had 11 points and seven rebounds for Willapa Valley.

Coach Pearson cited the reserve play of Allen Deniston, who grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

MENLO — Well-balanced Naselle cashed in on South Bend turnovers to prevail Wednesday on the opening day of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic at Tenoski Gym.

The Indians (1-8) play Pe Ell for third place in the tourney today.

South Bend trailed by only four (19-15) after one quarter.

“I thought we came out of the gate pretty well,” Tribe coach Manuel Rangel said. “The kids battled hard but it’s pretty hard to hold up against Naselle’s pressure. And they shoot pretty well.”

Logan Stamos scored 12 points and Raul Mora 11 for the Indians. Michael Oropeza and Nathan Ashley grabbed eight rebounds each.

WESTPORT — Zach Allton scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half as Ocosta took a shootout from Mossyrock in a non-league game Wednesday at Westport.

The fast-paced contest included 160 field-goal attempts and 59 free throws.

“This was about as ugly a basketball game as you can imagine,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “We wanted to play fast tonight, but maybe we needed about 18 more practices. Just a real sloppy Christmas-break game.”

Ocosta’s Kobe Beck hit five 3-pointers in the first half to tally 24 points for the Wildcats (6-5).

Allton also pulled down 12 rebounds, while 5-foot-5 Alex Bailey had eight boards.

The Wildcats will challenge league-leading Life Christian Academy on Jan. 3.
