Willapa Valley 71, Raymond 50
Willapa Valley got balanced scoring up-and-down the lineup en route to a 71-50 season-opening victory over Raymond on Wednesday at Raymond High School.
With six players scoring at least eight points apiece, including three starters in double figures, Willapa Valley (1-0 overall, 1-0 Pacific 2B) held a 33-23 lead at the half before blowing the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Seagulls (0-1, 0-1 Pacific 2B) by 13 points in the period.
Logan Walker and Chad Flemetis scored 14 points apiece to lead Willapa Valley, followed closely by fellow starter Allen Deniston, who tallied 13 points to go along with his eight rebounds.
Tyler Adkins scored nine points for the Vikings while both Carter Pearson and Beau Buchanan added eight points each for Willapa Valley. Buchanan also recorded a game-high 19 rebounds to his stat-line.
“It was a well-rounded game for our first game out,” Vikings head coach Jay Pearson said. “We were a little rusty at the beginning but we settled down. … We spread the court, drove and dished and I think our size affected them.”
Raymond’s Tre Seydel scored a game-best 22 points, but the Seagulls struggled to find much offense aside from the sophomore guard with no other player scoring in double figures.
“Their size and length was disruptive and simply an issue for us,” Raymond head coach Derek Rask said. “We had a difficult time with that on both ends of the floor.”
Next up for Willapa Valley is a road game against Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Raymond will host Ocosta in a league game also scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
