The Aberdeen Bobcats baseball team ended a four-game losing streak with a blowout win over Shelton and the Grays Harbor College softball team split a pair of games against Centralia as we look at your Twin Harbors sports for Wednesday.
BASEBALL
Aberdeen 14, Shelton 2
The Bobcats bats came alive and senior pitcher Eli Brown had a solid outing as Aberdeen broke a four-game losing streak with a 14-2 five-inning victory over Shelton on Wednesday at Pioneer Park in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen (4-7 overall, 3-7 2A Evergreen) took an early 3-0 on RBI doubles from Brown and Luca Pisani followed later in the inning by a Trevon Nichols runs-scoring single.
Shelton (5-6, 4-6) responded with a run in both the second and third innings to cut the Aberdeen lead to just one run.
But after being held scoreless in the second inning, Aberdeen got to Shelton starter Kyle Gerchak for five runs in the third as the Bobcats took advantage of Highclimbers miscues. With one out, Brown reached on an error followed by Hunter Eisele drawing a walk and Pisani singling to load the bases.
Gerchak then walked Mason Sorenson and Nichols for a 5-2 Bobcats lead.
Tobie Heggie drove in two runs with a single and — after Charlie Ancich grounded out — Kale Goings reached on Shelton’s second error of the inning. Nichols scored on the play to extend Aberdeen’s lead to 8-2.
In the top of the fourth, Brown wasted little time getting the Aberdeen offense back at the plate, retiring Shelton 1-2-3 in the right-hander’s quickest and most efficient inning of the game.
Aberdeen bats stayed hot in the bottom half of the inning as four of the first five Bobcats knocked base hits to take a 10-2 lead.
Heggie drove in a run on a fielder’s choice ground out followed by an RBI double from Ancich for a 12-2 lead.
The Bobcats then scored a run on a dropped third strike followed by an RBI single from Brown to complete the scoring at 14-2.
Brown gave up a single in top of the fifth, but worked around it and struck out Brendan Wagner to end the game, giving Aberdeen the much-needed victory.
“Honestly, we had a bit of a mental lapse. When you play Chehalis and Tumwater back-to-back, and you play them well but you still lose, you kind of start thinking,” Aberdeen head coach Dave Hinchen said. “The momentum was going the wrong way. But today, Eli Brown was not going to let us lose. … He said, ‘I’m a senior, jump on and let’s go.’”
Brown went the full five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts on 77 pitches.
Hinchen noted Brown’s battery mate, freshman catcher Charlie Ancich, as helping “steal six or seven strikes back there, just framing them.”
“That’s a freshman catching a big-time pitcher. … He had a really good day.”
Offensively, Aberdeen tallied 13 hits off three Shelton pitchers, led by Brown (3-4, 2 2B, 3R, 2RBI) and Pisani (3-3, 2 2B, 3R, 2RBI), who each had a pair of doubles and three hits in the game.
Nichols (2-2, 2R, 3RBI) and Ancich (2-3, 2B, RBI) also had multi-hit games and Heggie drove in three runs for the Bobcats.
“It was one of those games where everybody showed up and had a hand in (the win),” Honestly, the tone is set by your senior who went up there and threw strikes. It’s really easy to play defense behind a guy that is throwing strikes.”

Grays Harbor 2, Centralia 1
Propelled by the pitching of Sha’kayla Harris and a blast off the bat of Mikaila Neilson, Grays Harbor took the first game of a doubleheader against Centralia 2-1 on Wednesday at the Bishop Sports Complex in Aberdeen.
Harris and Centralia pitcher Hailey Sneedon were locked in a pitcher’s dual the entirety of the seven-inning contest.
Harris allowed a lone run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Blazers shortstop and former Pe Ell-Willapa Valley standout Katie Adkins, but shut the Blazers down the rest of the way, scattering four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in her six innings pitched.
Grays Harbor (2-8 overall, 1-7 NWAC South) tied the game off Sneedon in the fourth when Harris scored on a sacrifice by Shaylee Bisbee.
Neilson led off the fourth inning with a home run to give Grays Harbor a lead it would never relinquish.
Neilson went 2-for-3 with the home run to lead the Chokers.
Dominique Marin (1-3), Ashlynn Sparks (1-2), Harris (1-2, R) and Elma graduate Kassedy Olson (1-3) had a hit apiece for Grays Harbor.

Centralia 10, Aberdeen 8
Grays Harbor fell behind early and a late rally fell short in a 10-8 loss to Centralia in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday in Aberdeen.
Centralia scored five runs in the top of the first as Chokers starter Shaylee Bisbee struggled to get out of the inning.
Grays Harbor responded in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring doubles from Ashlynn Sparks and Mikaila Neilson to cut the Blazers lead to 5-2.
But Centralia put up three more runs in the third inning for a commanding 8-2 lead.
Chokers shortstop Natalie Medina tripled to score Kassedy Olson and Bisbee to trim the Blazers lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the second as the two teams combined for 12 runs over the first two frames.
The six-run differential remained until the top of the sixth when Centralia scored a pair of runs on a Casey Wentz RBI single and a Kerianne Cline ground out.
In the bottom of the sixth with one on and one out, Bisbee blasted a home run over the left field fence for a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 10-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Former Elma Eagle Destry Dineen singled and advanced to third one batter later on a Neilson double.
After a Harris ground out, Neilson and Dineen scored on a ball in play from Anna Beeler to make it a 10-8 game. Bisbee followed with a pop out to end the game.
Neilson led the Chokers offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI).
Medina, Bisbee and Beeler drove in two runs each for the Chokers.
Centralia’s Paige Bryant (7IP, 6ER, 8H, 2K, 5BB) earned the win with Bisbee (0.1IP, 4ER, 4H) taking the loss.

BOYS SOCCER
Elma 4, Montesano 0
Elma peppered the Montesano net with 18 shots as the Eagles blanked the Grizzlies 4-0 on Wednesday in Elma.
Elma (7-2-1, 7-1 1A Evergreen) scored its lone first-half goal in the 35th minute when Gavin Blakett scored off a cross from Aiden Sayers-Hartman for a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Eagles got second-half goals from Manny Hernandez (assist Abel Alatorre, 46th minute), Sayers-Hartman (corner kick from Jose Perez, 74th) and Cason Seaberg (cross from Blakett, 81st) to sweep the season series against Montesano (4-6, 4-5).
“We played a really good defensive game in the first half,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said. “The second half was a different story a far as set pieces are concerned.”
Sanchez said Elma’s height and athleticism led to two goals off corner kicks in the second half.
“We pretty much let them walk in and have easy shots off the corner pieces,” he said. “(Elma) has some good players that can do some things in set pieces, but we have to do a better job of staying with our marks and following them all the way to the goal.”
Monte will be the 1A Evergreen League’s No. 4 seed entering next week’s district tournament.
No further information was available for this game at the time of this writing.
