Montesano earned what may be the most one-sided victory in East County Rivalry history with a 65-7 victory over Elma on Wednesday at Bo Griffith Memorial Gymnasium in Montesano.
Montesano (12-1 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen), which is currently ranked No. 2 in the WIAA RPI rankings and No. 4 by scorebooklive.com, had little trouble against a young, undersized Elma squad.
The Bulldogs started the game on a huge run, opening up a 21-0 lead on a McKynnlie Dalan 3-pointer with 3:30 to go in the first quarter.
By the end of the period, Montesano had opened up a 29-4 lead.
In the second quarter, Monte guard Jordan Karr put the Bulldogs up 34-4 on a three from the elbow at the 5:40 mark.
Elma, whose tallest player is listed at 5-foot-9, struggled to get the ball into the front court against Montesano’s press defense. When the Eagles did cross the center line, open looks were few and far between as Monte defenders swarmed the ball.
Montesano held Elma scoreless in both the second and third quarters.
“Our defense was very good,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We played with a lot of intensity and it was a really good team effort.”
Montesano hit 24-of-54 (44%) shot from the field, including 4-for-8 (50%) from 3-point range while Monte’s defense that recorded 13 steals in the game.
Dalan led all scorers with 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals.
Paige Lisherness scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds and Olivia Young had eight points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Elma (2-7, 1-3) was led by Eliza Sibbett, who scored three points.
Next up, Montesano faces Eatonville in Eatonville while Elma hosts Hoquiam. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Tenino 48, Hoquiam 23
A slow start against one of the league’s top teams ended in a 48-23 loss for the Hoquiam Grizzlies against Tenino on Wednesday in Hoquiam.
Hoquiam (4-9, 0-5 1A Evergreen) fell behind 20-4 at the end of the first quarter and never found an offensive rhythm in suffering its ninth straight loss.
”We have to play with a greater sense of urgency as a team to finish this season strong,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “I know we are a much better team than we showed tonight.”
Grizzlies senior shooting guard Charli Sampson-Eastman led Hoquiam with 11 points.
Tenino (11-3, 3-0) was led by Ashley Schow’s 23 points.
Hoquiam takes on Elma at 7 p.m. Friday at Elma High School.

South Bend 53, Oakville 20
South Bend extended an early lead en route to a 53-20 victory on Wednesday in South Bend.
South Bend (3-9, 1-5 2B Pacific) used a halfcourt press to open the game on an 11-0 run that was extended to 18-0 after switching to a zone defense.
Playing mostly its bench in the second quarter, South Bend extended its lead to 31-7 by halftime.
“Our girls are stepping up their play each game and finding the open man for good looking shots,” South Bend head coach Randy Carlson said. “When you break open a game like this it’s a good time to get minutes for the whole team. Our defense is improving daily.”
Berklee and Raydynn Morley scored 10 points apiece to lead South Bend, which had 11 players score in the game.
South Bend faces Chief Leschi at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Puyallup.

Chief Leschi 66, North Beach 53
North Beach lost a league matchup to Chief Leschi 66-53 on Tuesday in Puyallup.
The Hyaks (6-9, 3-8 2B Pacific) were within striking distance for much of the game, trailing Chief Leschi (12-1, 7-1) by four points heading into the fourth quarter.
“We played a really solid game for three quarters but ran out of gas and our inability to make free throws hurt also,” said North Beach head coach Larry Moore, whose team went 6-for-18 (33%) from the charity stripe. “The team as a whole put up a good fight.”
Senior center Tre’Vaughn Greene had a huge game for the Hyaks, scoring 25 points, grabbing 25 rebounds and blocking seven shots in the loss.
North Beach guard Josh Bighead scored 10 points while Moore commended Tyrell Hovland for having (a solid defensive game” for the Hyaks.
