Wednesday Roundup: Montesano wrestlers take third at King of the Castle

Also: Elma downed by Columbia-White Salmon in girls basketball

Montesano wrestlers won four weight classes to place third overall as a team at the King and Queen of the Castle wrestling tournament on Wednesday at Stadium High School in Tacoma.

The Bulldogs scored 191 points to place third behind Spanaway Lake (251.5) and Lincoln of Tacoma (219.5) in the 18-team meet.

Cole Ekerson (138 pounds), Sean Ryker (145), Gage Stutesman (152) and Mateo Sanchez (182) each placed first in their respective weight-classes to lead the Bulldogs.

Ekerson won via pinfall over all three of his opponents in the 138-pound class, including a finals victory over Evergreen (Vancouver) grappler Felix Estrada at the 2:35 mark.

Ryker also had three pinfall wins and defeated Evergreen (Vancouver) wrestler Noel Vega via pinfall at 5:31 to win the 145-pound title.

Stutesman navigated through four match victories in the meet, culminating with a thrilling overtime victory over Spanaway Lake’s Joseph Coleman in the 152-pound final.

Sanchez dominated the 182-pound class, winning via pinfall in each of his three matches, defeating King’s Way Christian’s Jasper Armstrong via fall at 4:35.

Monte’s Adam Schmitz placed second at 106 and Gabe Pyhala placed third at 170.

In the girls competition, Montesano’s Samantha Darrin placed third overall in the 170-pound weight class. Darrin defeated Lindbergh’s Miranda Hood via pinfall at 1:00 in the third-place match.

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Columbia-White Salmon 44, Elma 29

Scoring woes kept Elma from victory in a 44-29 loss to Columbia-White Salmon on Wednesday in Elma.

The Eagles (1-4) led 15-13 after the first quarter thanks to four 3-pointers as a team, led by two from Mia Monroe.

But Elma went 3 of 20 from the field in the second quarter to trail 26-24 at the half and went scoreless in the third quarter.

Elma shot 15% from the field in the game on 10-of-65 shooting and were led by Monroe (9 points) and Emmie Spencer (8 points).

Elma’s next scheduled game is against Hoquiam at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Hoquiam High School.

Winlock 60, South Bend 36

South Bend couldn’t slow down Winlock’s Kindyl Kelly en route to a 60-36 loss on Wednesday at Winlock High School.

South Bend (0-6) trailed 29-15 at the half and 45-27 at the end of the third quarter while struggling to stem the tide of Winlock’s offense.

Kelly scored 27 points to lead all scorers with Kiya Peppers adding 14 points for the Cardinals.

South Bend was led by Ava Pine, who scored 13 points in the game.

“I am pleased with the improvements that we have made so far this season and I know that we are on the way to reaching our potential,” South Bend head coach Jon Schray said.

South Bend will host Toledo at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
