Ocosta moved into a tie for third place in the 2B Central-North League with a 6-2 win over Ilwaco on Wednesday at Ilwaco High School.
Ocosta (6-7-1 overall, 4-4 2B Central-North) got on the board early when senior forward Miki Ness scored with less than a minute elapsed in the match.
Ness would go on to score four more goals in the game, all off assists from eighth-grader Joanah Rosander.
Ness scored on a long shot from the right sideline then off a long through pass from Rosander in the 13th minute for Ocosta’s first two goals of the game.
Ocosta’s Liv Bartley scored what would turn out to be the game-winner in the 31st minute, beating the Ilwaco keeper 1-on-1 for the Wildcats’ third goal.
Less than two minutes later, Rosander fed Ness for her third goal of the first half and a 4-0 lead.
Leading 4-1 at the half, Ocosta allowed a second Fishermen goal early in the second half, but Rosander would assist to Ness on two goals in the half — in the 61st and 74th minutes — to secure the victory.
“We lost Kennedy Reynolds when she was taken down in the third minute. It impacted our game plan as she scored five goals the last time we played Ilwaco,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We had to adjust to a midfield of two eighth graders and two freshmen for a good portion of the game. The team responded by holding off the Fishermen for the final 33 minutes.”
King cited the combination of Rosander and Ness, Bartley for getting her first goal, and defenders Meghan Denny and Taeler Jardine for their performance.
Ocosta hosts Raymond-South Bend — which is tied for third place with the Wildcats — in a contest that will determine the league’s No. 3-4 spots at 6 p.m. Monday.
