North Mason Invitational

BELFAIR — Aberdeen placed four wrestlers into the finals, with two of them winning their weight divisions, during Wednesday’s North Mason Invitational.

Overall, Aberdeen had eight placers in the tournament and finished sixth overall. North Beach was also at the tournament.

“I gave the guys four days off, so this was a ‘get back into shape’ tournament for them,” AHS head coach Jimmy Martin said. “We were a little out of shape, but we should be ready to go.”

Tyler Sopupamannichanh won the 132-pound division with a pin at 4:44 over North Mason’s Cole Varick, while Jacob Jamiston won the 195 title with an 8-2 decision over Port Angeles’ Bryce Lauderback.

At 120, Angel Cosneros lost to Port Angeles’ Cody Anderson, 4-2, while teammate Edgar Salazar lost by pin at 4:46 to Bremerton’s Connor Eals in the 126 finals.

Skyler Murray took third at 285, with Andres Cisneros (220), Favian Orjeo (285) and Cameron Harris (106) each taking fifth place.

For North Beach, senior Seth Bridge lost to Nico Ramires, of North Mason, by a major decision, 13-5, in the 285 final. Hunter Dianovich took fourth at 195 to round out the Hyaks’ placers.

On Wednesday, Aberdeen starts up Evergreen 2A Conference competition with a home dual meet against Black Hills.

LYNDEN — A third-quarter cold spell cost Montesano as Lynden defeated the Bulldogs in the Lynden Cloud Nine Christmas Classic on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (8-2) led by one at halftime, but came out of the locker room cold, not scoring for almost five minutes as Lynden ran out to a 9-point lead. Monte worked back to a 4-point deficit, but couldn’t overcome the lack of offense in the third quarter.

“It was definitely a battle,” Monte coach Julie Graves said. “The first half was just back and forth. The beginning of the third quarter, they scored 11 straight points, we didn’t score for the first five minutes of the first quarter. They hit four of their 10 three pointers in the third quarter. They are a very good basketball team and it was a good basketball game all around except for those five minutes there.”

Montesano was led by 25 points and 10 rebounds from Jordan Spradlin. Cheyann Bartlett added seven points, while Josie Talley and Shayla Floch each pulled down seven rebounds. Floch, Spradlin and Josie Toyra each had three assists.

Montesano is off until they host Tenino on Jan. 6.

MENLO — Kaelin Jurek’s put back with just eight seconds left in the game lifted Pe Ell over South Bend in the third-place game of the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic at Tenoski Gym on Wednesday.

The Indians (0-10) led by four points with four minutes left in the game, but the Trojans tied the game up with four straight free throws and took the lead on a 3-pointer from Max Smith with two minutes on the clock. South Bend’s Drew Rose tied the game back up at 39-39 a minute later, but Jurek was able to secure on offensive rebound and put a short jumper to put the Trojans up for good with eight ticks on the scoreboard.

South Bend got one last possession, but a long shot from Rose was off the mark.

“Our kids played hard and showed a lot of energy tonight, just a couple breaks here and there,” South Bend coach Manuel Rangel said. “It was a tough one to lose. Our kids played good defense, we just struggled putting the ball in the basket.”
