Josh Burgher’s 35 leads Hoquiam to golf win over Aberdeen

Grizzlies 167, Bobcats 180

Josh Burgher’s brilliant 35 led Hoquiam past Aberdeen in a non-league battle of Grays Harbor rivals on Wednesday at Highland Golf Course.

Burgher carded an even-par round despite lipping out a few birdie putts. Ryan Cole added a 41 for the Grizzlies.

Led by Brendan King’s 40, the Bobcats carded their lowest round of the season. Aberdeen coach Dan Sundstrom commended the play of Jaxson Larson and Nick Farrer.

“The weather was perfect and so was the hospitality of the Highland Golf Course staff,” Sundstrom said. “During the match, it was like watching best friends play nine holes on a weekend. They were high-fiving each other on good shots and givin words of encouragement on the not-so-good shots.”

RIDGEFIELD — Montesano finished second in a three-team match Tuesday at the Tri-Mountain Golf Course.

Led by medalist Sean Ball with a 37, Seton Catholic took team honors with 172. Montesano totaled 189 and La Center 199.

Payson Parker shot 45 and Matthew Johnson 46 for the Bulldogs.

Aberdeen captured a pair of three-set matches to top Centralia in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Wednesday at the Sam Benn Courts.

Bobcat senior Luis Garcia outlasted Zack Kaiser, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in a 2 1/2-hour contest in the No. 1 singles. Down 5-2 in the third set, Aberdeen’s third doubles team of Brice Kola and Nick Crocker swept the final five games to edge Josef Kilhoffer and Bradon Wilkerson.

Aberdeen’s other wins came from Josh Germeaux and Aaron Dyer in singles and the doubles team of Tanner Williams and Cody Sayres.

The Bobcats (3-3, 5-3) visit Olympia in a non-leaguer Friday.

Wildcats win shootout

WESTPORT — Goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson made two saves in a shootout to help Ocosta beat Winlock in a Central League game Wednesday night at Westport.

After regulation and overtime ended scoreless, the Wildcats made all three of their shootout attempts. Teal Mitby (making her season debut), Kjirstin Hopfer and Katelynn Denny connected for Ocosta (3-3, 4-3).

Recording her fourth shutout of the season, Raffelson blocked Winlock’s first and third attempts. The Cardinals missed high on their second try.

The Wildcats outshot the Cardinals, 25-6, but missed a penalty kick with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Winlock had a major opportunity with an open net at the end of regulation, but shot wide.

Ocosta coach Mike King cited Mitby, Hopfer and Jennifer Rosas for outstanding passing and Denny, Abriana Ness and Adriana Huerta for hustle.

The Wildcats host Mount Rainier Lutheran at 2 p.m. Saturday.
