Montesano sweeps
MONTESANO — Shayla Floch and Madison Schupbach won three girls events apiece as Montesano swept team honors from Hoquiam and Forks in a three-way Evergreen 1A League meet Wednesday at Rottle Field.
With 75 points, Monte’s boys finished nine points ahead of runner-up Hoquiam. The Bulldog girls outscored the Grizzlies, 77-50.
Floch won the girls high jump with a leap of 5 feet, the best in the state among Class 1A jumpers thus far. She also took the 100 meters in 13.82 and the long jump with a 15-8 mark.
Schupbach took the 100 hurdles and triple jump, while joining in Monte’s winning sprint relay team.
Montesano’s Jordan Spradlin, the reigning state champion in the girls 1A shot put and discus, won both events Wednesday. Her 127-6 discus mark represented a season best.
The Bulldog boys scored heavily in the distances. Jake Mustard was a double winner in the 800 and 1,600, with Josef Aschenbrenner taking the 3,200.
Making his season debut, Monte’s Lyle Burbidge won both boys hurdles.
“Considering the weather we had, it was a real solid performance all the way around,” Bulldog girls coach Doug Schupbach said. “On the girls side, our depth really helped.”
He cited Liz Peterson, Sam Winter, Bryce Whipple, Donovan Albert, Seth Dierkop, Bryce Englund and Tanner Nicklas for fine performances.
Anthony Nash was a triple winner for Hoquiam’s boys, sweeping the 100 (11.57) and 200 (23.82) in addition to running a leg on a victorious sprint relay team.
Nash, however, was one of the few Grizzlies to run a full complement of events in a meet contested in cold, wet weather. Several team members were battling sore muscles and assorted aches and pains.
“I kind of err on the side of caution, with this weather,” Grizzly coach Tim Pelan said. “I’m not ready to go gung-ho yet in turning the kids loose in three or four events.”
Karlie Krohn was a multiple winner for Hoquiam’s girls, taking the javelin with a throw of 88-1/2 and sharing in the Grizzlies’ 4×200-meter relay victory.
Pelan also praised Savannah Lutz for capturing her varsity debut in the girls 800 meters.
Montesano will compete in Battle Ground’s Tiger Invitational on Saturday. Hoquiam will host a league meet next Thursday.
