Pirates 7, Bulldogs 5

MONTESANO — On Senior Night, Montesano worked through its lineup, fell behind to Adna and saw a seventh-inning rally fall short in a non-league loss on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pirates posted a 7-1 lead after 4 1/2 innings before the Bulldogs ralled with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh.

In the seventh, a baserunning mistake, triggered by the third-base coach, ran Montesano out of a potential no-out rally. One at-bat earlier, Samantha Stanfield had a two-run double to trim the deficit to 7-5.

“The coach got caught rooting for the batter to beat out an infield single, which ended up as a fielder’s choice,” Montesano head coach Pat Pace, who was coaching third at the time, said. “There were no outs and (Stanfield) heard me go, ‘Go. Go. Go,’ and she went. It took the wind right out of our sails. It just proves that the players aren’t the only ones who make mistakes.

“What was good about the game, however, was in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, they battled back,” Pace added. “They feel like they can come back on anyone.”

On Monday, Montesano (15-4) hosts Yelm.
