Chokers fall in back-to-back doubleheaders

In Sunday’s first game, the Chokers fell behind early after Tacoma scored seven runs in the second inning.

Down 11-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Grays Harbor scored seven runs to climb back into the game, capped by a grand slam home run from Chokers designated hitter Jayden Cabbab.

SHELTON — Aberdeen Bryon Sidor posted a personal-best time of 49.53 — nearly a full second ahead of his closest competitor — to win the 400 meters at the 58th Annual Shelton Invitational on Saturday in Shelton. His mark is the fastest in the state’s 2A division this season, third fastest in the state overall.

Sidor also won the boys 200-meter race with a time of 22.87 and placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.46. He was named the prestigious meet’s boys Athlete of the Meet for his efforts.

The Bobats boys team finished ninth overall with 27 points.

Raymond’s girls team also placed ninth overall with 26 points thanks in large part to thrower Karlee Freeman.

Freeman, who held the longest discus throw in the nation until Saturday, rebounded from a minor injury sustained early in the day to win the discus with a mark of 149 feet, eight inches and placed second in both the shot put (41-07.00) and javelin (127-01).

North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship won the girls pole vault event as the only competitor to clear the 11-foot mark — a half-foot better than Sequim’s Elizabeth Sweet, who placed second. “We think as the weather gets better she’ll be able to go even higher, which is kind of scary,” said North Beach head coach Peter Fry about his senior’s section-leading leap. “We were really enthralled with that.”
