The Chehalis Activator track and field meet returned after a short hiatus due to COVID and the talents of multiple Harbor athletes were on display over the weekend at WF West High School.

The venerable meet, which features top talent from schools across the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s District 4, consisted of an “Invitational” round on Friday and a “Classic” meet on Saturday, with Saturday’s competition featuring the top competitors from across district schools.

The Twin Harbors had no shortage of Classic winners.

With multiple event victories by hurdler Collin Babineau and first-place finishes from jumper Andrew Troeh and thrower Tyler Bates, the deep Aberdeen Bobcats boys team cruised to a team win in the Men’s Classic.

Aberdeen scored 89 points, well ahead of second-place Rainier (65) and third-place Napavine (63).

Ocosta finished fourth with 62 points and got wins by senior sprinter Matthew Idso (400) and the 4×400 relay team of Michael Reynolds, Matthew Idso, Dylan Todd and William Idso.

Hoquiam was the top local team in the girls competition, placing second with 77 points behind WF West (151).

The Grizzlies were led by Oklahoma-bound thrower Tyara Straka, who cruised to victories in both the shot put and discus competitions.

Hoquiam distance runner Jane Roloff also had a strong meet, placing first in the 3,200 meter race and taking second in the 1,600.

PREP TENNIS

Aberdeen sweeps rare doubleheader against Shelton

Due to a rainout earlier in the week, the Aberdeen girls tennis team faced Shelton not once, but twice on Friday, winning both matches by scores of 4-2.

“It is the first doubleheader for tennis in my entire career. It worked out great,” said Aberdeen head coach Dave Bruncke, adding that the matches were scored as one pro-set (first to eight) rather than the typical two out of three sets.

Aberdeen singles players Kallie Knutson and Hadley Ritter “had dominating days,” according to Bruncke, in sweeping the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches, respectively.

Other Aberdeen highlights were the doubles pairings of Maddie Casey/Clowe Stolen and Lizbeth Cisneros/Char Gutierrez earning come-from-behind wins and Maritza Guzman and Macy Cogburn bouncing back from a loss in the first round to win 8-4 in the second set of matches.

“It was a great, sunny day to get in a bunch of tennis,” Bruncke said.

PREP GIRLS GOLF

Aberdeen 107, Hoquiam 72

Aberdeen benefited from some high-level golf from three of its top performers in defeating Hoquiam 107-72 on Friday at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.

As Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom put it: “It seems like when the sun comes out, the scores get better.”

That was true up and down both lineups as each golfer on both rosters recorded season-best rounds.

Aberdeen standout Britt Rajcich led the way, scoring 30 points (Stableford scoring system) to win Medalist of the Match honors.

Saylor Heikkila and Kaitlyn McCracken added 24 and 20 points, respectively, for the Bobcats.

Hoquiam was led by Eva Jump, who scored 18 points for the Grizzlies followed closely by Minh Thi Butler (18).

Highlights of the match included Rajcich nearly recording a hole-in-one on the part-3 12th hole and Heikkila carding birdies on No. 14 and No. 16.

Aberdeen’s Alice Earley chipped in for par on the 17th hole and while Hoquiam’s Jump drained a long 40-foot par putt on the final home of the match.

“My wife, (Hoquiam head coach) Patty Sundstrom and I are so proud of how our teams played,” Dan Sundstrom said. “We got to see and hear about some spectacular golf shots.”
