CHELAN — Five Hoquiam wrestlers qualified for the finals, with four of them winning their weight divisions, to power the Grizzlies to a second-place team finish at the Chelan Goat New Years Classic on Saturday.

Lutra Felten (106 pounds), Malaki Eaton (113), Andre’s Vazquez (138) and Artimus Johnson (182) won their finals, with Felten and Eaton winning by pin — Felten pinned Chelan’s Lazaro Soria at 1:30 and Eaton pinned teammate Alex Houbregs at 2:30.

Vazquez was awarded the 138 final when Royal’s Victor Santillan was disqualified with Vazquez leading, 7-4. Johnson took a tough 4-1 victory over Cle Elem’s Jack Moen in a battle of state-ranked wrestlers.

“Our four champions and five finalists is a high mark for the season,” HHS head coach T.J. Helland said. “Lutra returned from vacation and was dominant. Andre’s won his first career tournament title in a very hard fought match. Artimus got to face his best competition of the year and won his finals by wreslting mistake-free. (Moen) is someone we could see (in the placing matches) at state.”

Antonio Garcia (132) and Jordan Sears (195) took third, while Jordan Zapata (145) and Zack Underwood (285) finished fourth.

Vikings 50, Mules 41

MENLO — Following a rough first quarter, Willapa Valley reemphasized its defense against Wahkiakum and took control of this non-league match on Monday night.

Down 14-12 after one quarter, the Vikings held the Mules to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters and dared the visitors to hit from the outside. Wahkiakum only converted 3-for-26 from behind the 3-point arc in the contest.

“We had a heart-to-heart after the first quarter,” Valley head coach Jay Pearson said. “We talked defene and I was very pleased with the way we played defense in the final three quarters.”

Walker Oblad led the Vikings (3-4, 4-4) with 16 points, with Ryon Ashley fighting off a rough shooting night to score 13. Peter Hamilton pulled down nine rebounds and Chad Flemetis, who was cited for his floor game, had seven rebounds. Oblad was also cited for his offense on the night.

On Wednesday, Valley travels to Naselle.
