Not a program to shy away from a challenge, Montesano took on its second straight 2A opponent on the road in as many nights, defeating White River 57-52 on Saturday in Buckley.
One night after falling to WF West in Chehalis, Monte (11-3 overall) was back in action against the 2A South Puget Sound League-leading Hornets (8-4).
The Bulldogs trailed 11-6 after one quarter but found their legs in the second frame to take a 21-19 lead at the half.
Monte pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring White River 26-15 in the frame.
The Hornets cut into the deficit with three 3-pointers in the final minutes of the game, but it was too little, too late as Montesano held on for the victory, its fourth over a 2A team this season.
“We really took control in the third quarter as we started moving the ball offensively,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “White River is a very good 2A team and is well-coached. … This is a really good win for us and I’m really proud that the entire team gave a great effort.”
Senior forward McKynnlie Dalan led the way with a double-double, scoring 24 points to go along with 14 rebounds for Montesano.
Junior guard/forward Mikayla Stanfield had one of the best games of her prep career with 15 points, 13 coming in Monte’s second-half blitz.
Freshman forward Evanjillie “Jillie” Dalan had 10 points and seven rebounds for Monte while senior guard Jaiden King had five points and seven key assists in the win.
Monte shot 20 of 56 from the field (36%) and 12 of 27 from the free-throw line (44%).
The Bulldogs also held a 33-29 rebounding advantage.
Monte hosts Hoquiam in a key 1A Evergreen League matchup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
