Led by a core of top-flight seniors, Montesano swept the competition at a 1A Evergreen League championship duals on Saturday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs won all four of its matches against league foes, besting Tenino 66-18, Elma 48-33, Eatonville 55-23 and Hoquiam 60-21.

Monte won 28 total matches on Saturday with 26 of those being pinfall victories, leading to a plethora of bonus points for the Bulldogs.

Montesano was led by its core of five seniors – Cole Ekerson, Mateo Sanchez, Sean Ryder, Kaleb Ames and Jesse Cervantes – each of whom were consistent scorers over the five-team dual meet.

“Very good leadership today,” Montesano head coach Jeff Klinger said. “We have leaned on those five seniors this year.”

The highlight for the Bulldogs came toward the end of the event, when Ekerson recorded the 100th win of his outstanding prep career, joining a very select club of Bulldogs grapplers to break the century mark.

Elma won two of its head-to-head duals on Saturday, beating Hoquiam 45-30 and Tenino 40-33.

The Eagles were led by Aiden McCain with three pinfall victories on the day.

Austin Salazar, Blaize Salazar, Aidyn Johnson and Eastin Wright each earned two pinfall wins for Elma and Taye Lessard earned a key 4-2 victory over Montesano’s Gage Stutesman.

“Overall, I was very pleased with Blaize Salazar who cemented his claim as a No. 1 seed at sub-regionals,” Elma head coach Jeff Catterlin said. “Taye Lessard has come on very strong the last two weeks with being the Rubber Chicken-champ at 145 pounds and gutting out a tough win against a quality kid like Gage Stutesman, who is going to be the next big star in Montesano’s line up in the coming years.”

Hoquiam’s lone dual victory of the tournament came in a 48-36 victory over Eatonville in which Oliver Bryson, Non Chaiyakam, Anthony Burtenshaw, Memphis Orama, Lincoln Troseth and Junior Soto all earned pinfall victories.

“Overall, a decent day,” Hoquiam head coach TJ Hellend said. “We had some guys with a really tough day due to the depth of certain weight classes in our league, but overall, fairly pleased with how the kids competed. We were down two starters today due to injury at 152 and 182 (pounds), and at 138 following our second dual, which may have allowed us to change our fortunes against Tenino. … but all that matters is the kids that needed rest were able to get it, and those that competed today are mostly healthy and heading into Sub-Regionals next week in Eatonville with a full head of steam.”
