Elma snapped a season-long losing streak with a 13-10 win over Montesano on Friday in Elma.
Montesano (5-7, 3-3 1A Evergreen) took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run triple by Jordan Karr in the top of the first, but Elma (1-7, 1-5) rallied for a pair of runs on a wild pitch followed by an RBI ground out by Emmie Spencer in the bottom half of the inning.
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the second on an RBI double by pitcher Riley Timmons followed by a solo home run off the bat of Madi Campbell.
But Elma would make the most of its opportunities against Timmons, who issued 11 walks, hit two batters and had nine wild pitches in the contest.
The Eagles tied the game at 4-4 on back-to-back RBI singles by Brooklyne Swarts and Carly Gay.
The Eagles took the lead later in the third when Chloe Clark drew a bases-loaded walk.
Elma would outscore Monte 8-1 in the fourth through sixth innings, taking a commanding 13-5 lead on Janessa Sample’s RBI single to score Hannah Warren in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, Montesano would make a run at an improbable comeback. With two outs in the frame, the Bulldogs scored two runs on a wild pitch, got a two-run double by Campbell and an RBI single by Paige Lisherness to close the gap to 13-10.
But the comeback attempt ended shortly thereafter when Elma reliever Maddie Monroe struck out Reghann Fairbairn to end the game.
“All season long we’ve been asking our girls, ‘What is going to give us the edge?’” Elma head coach Ashley Stancil said. “Catching foul balls, making the routine outs and stringing together our hits. That’s exactly what happened Friday night and I couldn’t be more proud of our team. Every single girl, whether they played in the game or not, contributed to our win and I’m super excited to see that going into our next few league games against Tenino and Hoquiam.”
Elma starting pitcher Delayne Hanson picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Gay (2-3, R, 2RBI) and Sample (2-4, R, 2RBI) led Elma’s offense with two hits apiece.
The loss spoiled a fantastic day at the plate for Campbell, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with a solo home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBI.
Montesano takes on first-place Eatonville in a twin bill starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Eatonville High School.
Elma takes on Tenino for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Tenino.
