The Grays Harbor College baseball and softball teams competed in doubleheaders this weekend as we take a look at some local sports action on the Twin Harbors.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Highline 9, Grays Harbor 6
Grays Harbor dropped the first game of a doubleheader to Highline 9-6 on Saturday at the Bishop Sports Complex in Aberdeen.
The Chokers (4-14 overall, 3-13 NWAC South) took a 6-1 lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth led by a bevy of locally-produced talent. Grays Harbor scored on an RBI double by Elma’s Destry Dineen, a two-run single by Taholah product Ruby Pope and an RBI double by Elma graduate Kassedy Olson to take a 4-0 lead.
Dominique Marin followed with a two-run double of her own to stake the Chokers to a 6-1 lead.
But Highline (4-4 overall, NWAC North) responded with seven runs in the top of the fifth off Grays Harbor pitcher Sha’kayla Harris and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Dineen (2-4, R, 2B, RBI) and Mikaila Neilson (2-4, 2B, R) led GHC with two hits each.
Harris allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings pitched.

Highline 18, Grays Harbor 8
Grays Harbor let an early lead slip away against a high-powered Highline offense as the Chokers were swept in Saturday’s twin bill with an 18-8 five-inning loss in the night cap.
Grays Harbor took a 4-1 lead after one inning on two-run doubles by Natalie Medina and Shaylee Bisbee.
But Highline’s offense tagged Grays Harbor pitcher Mikaila Neilson for six runs in the second, four in the third and six in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
The Chokers added a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run Neilson triple and two in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Sha’kayla Harris and an RBI single from Bisbee.
Neilson (3-3, 3B, R, 2RBI), Marin (2-3, 2R), Bisbee (2-3, 3RBI), and Pope (2-2, R) each had multi-hit games for the Chokers.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASEBALL
Green River 2, Grays Harbor 1
Grays Harbor College lost a pitcher’s duel 2-1 to Green River in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
Grays Harbor starting pitcher Trevor Barth allowed two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning then proceeded to lock down the Green River offense, allowing no hits over his next seven inning pitched.
But the Chokers (7-15 overall, 6-14 NWAC West) were only able to muster one run of support for Barth as Green River starter Glen McInerney was equally as impressive on the mound, allowing a run on an Aiden McCarthy triple in the fifth inning in a six-hit, eight-inning performance to pick up the win.
McCarthy was the only Choker with two hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with the RBI triple.
Barth took the hard-luck loss, allowing the two earned runs, three walks and eight strikeouts in an impressive eight innings pitched.
Andrew Shanrock threw a scoreless ninth inning in relief of Barth.

GIRLS PREP BOWLING
Black Hills 1640, Aberdeen 1489
Aberdeen’s girls bowling team lost to Black Hills by a total pin count of 1,640-1,489 on Friday at Rainier Lanes in Aberdeen.
With the 2A Evergreen League changing how matches were scored, moving away from single game scores to a score by total pins, both teams started slow before an experienced Wolves team was able to pull away from the Bobcats.
Black Hills’ Hallie Stuart, the reigning 2A state champion, bowled a 200 for the high game and recorded the high series score of the match with 497.
The Bobcats were led by sophomore Bailee Taylor, who set a new personal best high game of 162 and high series of 413 — both team high marks for the season.
“Our young team keeps getting better and we are having fun doing it,” Aberdeen head coach Dave Bruncke said.
Results (Game 1, 2, 3, Series)

BOYS PREP SWIMMING
Kelso 87, Aberdeen 62, Hoquiam 11
At the YMCA of Grays Harbor, Aberdeen and Hoquiam’s boys swimming teams hosted Kelso in their first home dual meet of the season on Saturday.
Kelso’s strength in numbers allowed it to come away with the dual meet win. However, Aberdeen and Hoquiam came away with seven event victories on the day.
“A great day overall for Aberdeen and Hoquiam,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “The entire team has worked hard to get up to speed in this short season. Meets like (Saturday’s) gives everyone a chance to see their work pay off and it really did.”
Aberdeen junior Russell Bates won two individual events, including a wafer-thin victory over Kelso’s Spencer’s Thomas by 0.01 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Bates also won the 50 free earlier in the meet.
Junior Colton Burns won the 200 individual medley and freshman Tyler Bates — Russell’s younger brother — won the 100 backstroke for the Bobcats.
Hoquiam’s Zach Parker won the Grizzlies’ first event of the season with a strong performance in the 100 butterfly.
Aberdeen finished with two relay wins — the 200 and 400 freestyle relays — with the team of Burns, Issac Brandt and Russell and Tyler Bates.
Coach Burns cited Jamieson Berney, Logen Seguin, Eli Olson and Hoquiam’s Tommy Wallace for their performances.
In a previously unreported meet, Aberdeen split a double-duel meet with Shelton and Central Kitsap. The Bobcats knocked off the Highclimbers 96-57 and fell to the Cougars 110-54.
