Grays Harbor College was back in action while the prep wrestling season kicked off as we review the weekend’s wrestling action on the Twin Harbors.
MEN’S COLLEGE WRESTLING
Chokers win home meet
Led by the performances of Diego Isiordia and Rocco Clark, the Grays Harbor College men’s wrestling team won their home event – the GHC Choker Open – on Sunday at Hoquiam High School.
Isiordia won three matches in the six-team event, beating Douglas College’s Rohit Bal 13-9 to win the 174-pound weight class.
Clark placed first in the 285-pound division, winning five matches – including a 14-1 major decision of University of Washington’s Keegan Bach – to take the top spot.
GHC also had five wrestlers place second in their respective weight classes to help the Chokers earn 135.5 points to place first ahead of Evergreen State (133.5) in the team standings.

Ureste wins at Choker Invite
Grays Harbor College women’s wrestler Renaeh Ureste emerged victorious at the GHC Choker Invite on Saturday at Hoquiam High School.
Ureste won all four of her matches on Saturday via pinfall, including a win over Kami Hart (unattached) at 1:40 to place atop the podium in the 191-pound weight class, earning the Chokers 18 points for her efforts.
GHC’s Maysa Brown and Courtney Jones also placed on the podium, with Brown taking fourth in the 136-pound class and Jones placing fourth at 143.
The Chokers totalled 51 points at the meet to place fourth overall as a team.
Southern Oregon University placed first with 194 points followed by Simon Fraser University (142.5) and Evergreen State College (98.5).

BOYS PREP WRESTLING
Elma takes second at Warrior Wrangle
The Elma Eagles placed second overall at the Warrior Wrangle wrestling tournament on Saturday at Rochester High School.
Elma scored 159.5 points to place second behind Cascade Christian (204.5) in team title competition.
Five Eagles won their respective weight classes to lead the Eagles.
Aydyn Johnson defeated Adna’s Ryder Calhoun via fall at 1:46 to win the 120-pound weight class.
Kale Reeves beat Klahowya’s Deacon Wintch via fall at 0:52 to take the top spot in the 132-pound division.
Caiden Rademacher defeated Yelm’s Evan Smith via 20-3 technical fall to win the 138-pound class.
Blaize Salazar won the 144-pound class by beating teammate Taye Lessard via 11-1 major decision.
Rusty Johnson beat Yelm’s Johnathon Grimmett by pinfall at 2:20 to win the 157-pound class.

Aberdeen places second at Ramrock Invitational
The Aberdeen High School boys wrestling team placed second overall at the Ramrock Invitational on Saturday at North Thurston High School in Olympia.
The Bobcats scored 142 points to place second behind Black Hills (170.5).
Timberline (135.5) and Capital (126) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Aberdeen was led by Talatheon Warness and Erick Silveira, each of whom won their respective weight classes at the eight-team meet.
Warness defeated Capital’s Kadyn Hagerty 4-3 to win the 113-pound weight class while Silveira defeated Olympia’s Michael Cary 8-4 to take first at 165.

Aberdeen at Lady Jag Kickoff Tournament
Aberdeen placed 12th overall in the team standings of the Lady Jag Kickoff Tournament on Saturday at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup.
The Bobcats earned a total of 64 points to place tied for 12th with South Kitsap in the 28-team meet.
In A-class competition, Aberdeen’s Felicia Bell and Peityn Munoz placed fourth in the 125 and 140-pound weight classes, respectively.
In the B-class competition, the Bobcats were led by Selena Martinez, who placed first at 155 with a victory over South Kitsap’s Persephone Miller via fall at 0:58.

Hoquiam’s Mazariegos wins at Yelm Jump On In
Hoquiam wrestler Meribel Mazariegos claimed an individual title at the Jump On In girls wrestling tournament on Saturday in Yelm.
Mazariegos advanced to the 145-pound final with two pinfall victories.
Mazariegos faced Mountain View’s Katharine Thompson in the final, where she won with an 11-3 major decision.
Also placing in varsity-bracket competition was North Beach’s Mayra Strandberg, who took sixth in the 120-pound weight class.
Elma’s Destiny Whipple had two wins in the 120-pound class while teammate Taylor Nesmith won twice in the 145-pound class.
Smith, Roundtree lead Montesano at Draper Memorial
The newly-formed Montesano girls wrestling program found success at the Wyatt Draper Memorial Invitational on Friday in Ridgefield.
Monte was led by standout Kya Roundtree and Julianna Smith, each of whom won their respective weight classes.
Smith defeated Skyview’s Taylor Nicholson via fall at 1:20 of the 105-pound title match to claim a weight-class title.
Roundtree defeated Skyview’s Nivayah Henry via fall at 1:13 to claim the 190-pound championship.
The Bulldogs placed fourth overall with 80 points.
