When her grandson was born a year ago, Cindy Perry, owner of the Pine Tree Sports Bar and Grill in Westport, wanted to create something lasting that would ensure her love of rock ‘n’ roll would live on in him.
The result is a new rock ‘n’ roll themed restaurant just up the road from the Pine Tree, RocknBrews, set to open April 1.
“I had this vision to do something to bring back Elvis and the Beatles and make sure he knows who they are,” said Perry. “It’s just kind of grown from there and kind of taken off.”
The opportunity arrived in the form of The Original House of Pizza, less than a mile north of the Pine Tree on North Montesano Street.
“This building opened up here and I came in, checked it out and fell in love with the layout,” said Perry. “I made an offer on the business and it went from there.”
She’s owned the Pine Tree for going on four years, a popular stop just across the main drag from the Shop N Kart grocery story.
“I was thinking if I owned another business this is what I would do.”
The layout was so appealing to Perry all she’s done structurally is take out the wall between the old bar and the dining area, putting a small bar area in the spot the cash counter at the pizza place stood.
“When you walk in now you get a whole panoramic view of the place,” said Perry.
She posted on her Facebook page earlier this year about RocknBrews, describing the layout of the restaurant and the views it will offer.
“Newly updated dining area with the addition of a lounge, outdoor seating, a great menu and we will also be serving specialty coffee!” she wrote. “Sit outside or inside to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Bay area. On a clear day, you can see the Olympics and Mt. Rainier. If you’re lucky, you’ll see some planes land.”
Perry’s travels to different restaurants and regions inspired some of her choices for the appearance of the interior, as well as the menu.
“I go to other places and see things that inspire me, and that’s how this one came about,” she said. “I am big into music, rock, country, all types.”
She likens the planned menu to a combination of The Rock Pizza, which serves wood fired pizza, sandwiches, wings and the like, and Buffalo Wild Wings, with its wings, sandwiches, salads and burgers.
“It will be a family friendly type place where children can go,” said Perry. “We serve alcohol and have a small sectioned off area where minors can’t go.”
The drink menu will include signature cocktails specializing in fresh juices. Perry said a mixologist, a person who teaches the art of drink making, will be coming in to teach servers how to prepare fresh drinks.
“That’s a feature we’re doing here that nobody else is doing,” she said. “Lemons, limes, the fruit will be fresh squeezed every morning. And non-alcoholic signature drinks, that’s all part of the new plan here.”
Local artists are contributing to the rock and roll theme with murals on the interior walls.
“I got together with local artists for the murals coming up on the walls,” said Perry. Some of the bands featured will be the Beatles and their iconic Abbey Road album cover, Nirvana, and 90s ska punk band Sublime, done by artists Nina Yates and Kemi Strode.
As for the planned April Fool’s Day opening, Perry said she bought the Pine Tree four years ago on that same date so she figured she “might as well keep it going.”
She plans a soft opening at first and a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening.
“I cannot believe the amount of support I have gotten for pulling this together, and nobody has been inside to see it yet,” said Perry.
RocknBrews will be located at the address of the old Original House of Pizza, 1200 N. Montesano St.
